I'm taking a 4 hr flight to Atlanta, w/ a 2.5 hr layover and then another hour flight to Nashville. I've only taken 1 hour flights before, and didn't have to worry about entertaining myself, the views alone kept me busy.

What do you do to keep from killing people out of boredom or seat rage? I'll take a Walkman for music & a couple of magazines, but I need other suggestions. What if the in-flight movie stinks? Can I do the Mile High club by myself? :P

For the long flight, is the window or aisle seat better? I have a small bladder. Drinking is out- it's going to be a loooong day.

Oh, and how early do they want you to show before the flight departs nowadays?

Thanks!

i feel like this is 1967 and someone's marveling over air travel. um, get there an hour before the flight. i love airports. i usually just walk around and watch people getting on/off planes. it's totally entertaining, but i can imagine not everyone would like it. and when you're on the plane, bring books. you will get bored of magazines after ten minutes. flights are usually the only time i do serious reading.

Books, gameboy, cd discman = I'm a happy camper at the airport and during the flight.

I often take loooong trips, and here's my .02$USD
Are you short? Tall(er) people like myself need aisle seats. Bring a book as much for reading as for defense against bores as it is for enjoyment. I like to listen to Dalen's ambient mixes when I travel, they always work, and Boards of Canada and Sigur Ros make clouds even more exceptional.
happy and safe travels

oh and
ps, take some gum, a convenience store dose of tylenol pm and anything you'd need desperately if they lost your luggage along with you, TSA restrictions in mind naturally.

If you're at all worried about anxiety, get a script for xanax. I don't fly without it.

If you're tall, get an exit row or the front of the plane (bulkhead or something?). Lots of leg room. Otherwise, the aisle seat is your best bet.

Grab a bunch of magazines that you wouldn't normally read before getting on the plane. I always get lots of girly magazines to look through.

Drink something even if you're not thirsty. Airplanes dry the fuck out of a person. I always drink tomato juice for some reason.

You want the aisle so you can stretch your legs and elbows out a bit more, but before of the carts. Bring a book, mp3 player, and sleep. Four hours is nothing. Pretty soon you'll be flying to Japan.

I thought you were talkin' really long. 4 hours ain't bad at all. Bring a book, and sit by the aisle. read 'til you get tired then nap til you land. I'm a fan of books over magazines for a flight as it's grae uninterrupted reading time and with four hours you can really make a dent in something, magazines lose their appeal to me after a a few minutes in most cases. Leave your headphones on so people won't try to talk to you.

And, yeah the xanax is never a bad idea.

Yeah, four hours isn't bad at all. If I'm flying over land, I'll spend a lot of time looking out the window, trying to figure out where I'm flying over. Otherwise, I read.

It is good to drink water, but it's a delicate balance- you don't want to have to get up too often, especially if you're not on the isle.

Try flying from Beijing to London with a 5-hour layover in Moscow and get back to me. ;)

- Books
- Video iPod w/ battery backup
- Earplugs & eyeshades
- Aisle seat

Thanks for the suggestions, all. Good tips.

I know 4 hours ain't much, but coupled w/ the 2.5 hour layover and the 2nd hour flight, I just don't want to be bored out of my skull. And I don't people-watch, unless they're cute, then I overdo it.

Won't need the Xanax- I'm not anxious about flying.

What about drum sticks?

The closest thing I can find about bringing these on my carry-on would be nunchakus, and these are verboten. :?

Hell, I see you can bring knitting or crochet needles, so sticks should be ok... I'd hate to throw out a couple pair of $15 sticks.

No dynamite??? WTF?

i once took a 19 hour flight from saudi arabia to norway to canada and then down to philly. then i drove back to boston from philly. didn't sleep at all on the plane and it's probably the worst flight i ever took.

i usually just sleep or listen to music.

I sleep and read on flights.

As for your 2.5 hour layover -- grab a bite to eat, have a drink or two, watch a bit of TV (there's usually a sports type bar), wander around the airport, jerk off in the public restroom, take that dump you wanted to take mid-flight but couldn't, and people watch like the others suggested.
