with the exception of john mellenhead, has the state ever produced a "scene," or anything at all?

i realize that the jackson 5 originated in gary, which is more like suburban chicago, but they're associated w/ motown. i didn't know jagjaguar was in indy. so besides 2 other singers, who originally are from there and made music elsewhere, have there been any bands?

i mean places like okla, boise, boulder, sacramento, burlington, etc. have all produced bands, but has indianapolis, terre haute, bloomington ever done anything?

We've never really created a scene here, no. The local music scene has always been a disappointment. Margot and the Nuclear So and Sos is probably the best band we've had.

Racebannon/Rapider Than Horsepower are from Indiana.

I think Jason Molina (Songs: Ohia, Magnolia Electic Co.) is, too.

In addition to Jagjaguar, Secretly Canadian is based in Indiana. (The two labels are sort of tied together, and I believe SC distributes Jagjaguar.)

edit: You guys have two of the best bands out there right now. Pay attention.

According to Wikipedia, Indiana was only slightly behind Chicago and New Orleans in embracing Jazz in the early 20th century, and was home to Gennett Records, a prominent jazz/blues/country label at the time.

Bloomington has, from what I understand, had a lively music scene for some time and I think has produced a fair number of bands, though I don't know which have achieved national recognition. But Jagjaguwar and SC are currently putting out some of my favorite music.

BTW, Indy = Indianapolis, not Indiana, and while Gary absorbs a lot of Chicago's backwash, it's hardly a suburb.

Oh yeah, they were.
Cute singer, too. And I think they even did a Television cover the one time that I saw them.

Well, if you're going to rob us of the source of some of our most prominent musicians, you're going to have to come up with a better reason that Gary is not in Indiana.

Well, I guess he's actually from Ohio. Still, it's close. And the label he's on is in IN.

as i mentioned earlier and realizing that gary is in ind. yes, the jackson 5 may have originated there, but it wasn't until they were a motown act that they received nat'l and int'l recognition.

Ok, well I guess using that narrow definition of "produced," you've got more of a case, but that seems artificial to me. I mean, the Jackson kids got the crap kicked out of them by their father in Gary, not Detroit, and that seems to be a pretty big influence on their various careers.

Oh shit, how did I miss that? From monty, no less.

God, I hope their new album finally comes out this year. Rapider Than Horsepower is pretty good, but they just do not compare.
