I finally got a credit card so I'm looking to start selling stuff.

I just put up a copy of Nick Drake's Pink Moon for sale but I don't quite have the intricacies of making a listing down pat yet.

How am I supposed to know how much to charge for shipping? It tells me to input an amount but I don't know how much it'll cost until I go to the post office with it. Is there a way to check? The post office's website or something? Is there an average rate that most people list? Same for insurance. I'd put it as optional but I don't know what that cost is at.

Is it worth putting a Buy It Now option or including photos in the search function and paying the extra sixty cents or whatever that eBay charges?

For something like a used cd, is a seven day auction your best bet?

Shipping for a cd is usually around $2.50-$3.

I don't think I've ever put a buy it now option on anything I've sold, though I don't really remember.

7 days is pretty standard.

I've used Buy it Now for a couple things but always asked pretty high prices in the chance you'll get someone who really wants it and will pay it then. This was with some OOP dvds. Probably won't work with Nick Drake. Also, just use their stock photo--assuming they have one for that. It's good enough. I say don't bother with insurance unless they request it.

Also check completed auctions for the things you are selling to see if it's even worth the bother to list it.

My problem is it's a largely American audience on eBay, right? So it costs more to send it out of country even if it's not going overseas or anything. I'm trying to think of how much I'm usually charged when I order a cd off eBay but it's been a while.

Yeah, I'm just using the stock photo unless my product's in significantly worse condition or different than the photo they provide. I just can't be bothered to take and upload the photos.

Harley, charge $3.50 for shipping. Don't forget, it's shipping and handling.

Also, I have found that the Buy It Now on CDs is not really worth it cause eBay charges you for that option.

Most sellers make their money off shipping. That way Ebay doesn't take a cut of the profits.

Shipping should be $25 for a cd. ;)

how do they crack down?

(My shipping is usually very close to actual. Honestly I usually underestimate shipping and kick myself later.)

I want to sell the stuff I don't want so I can afford to buy new stuff.

I did just blow $100 on the Beat Happening box set from amazon.co.uk though. So that felt good.

I think I ended up going with $3.50 to Canada, $7 to the States.

I just remember sending books out through BookMooch to the US and it costing me $10 or so after all is said and done. If I'm only making $3 off the disc to begin with, I don't want to wind up undercharging for shipping and having to front that myself.

I would never pay 7 bucks shipping on a cd that costs about 10 new. But maybe that's just me.

I know. I suspect I'm going to wind up screwed either way. I could put the shipping at $3 or whatever but, after I pay for the bubble envelope to mail it in and the postage, it'll come to around five or six dollars and I"ll basically be doing all this work to make $2.
