Mingus Ah Um is the only one I own, and it's awesome.

It was Mingus & Monk that made me aware that I don't dislike jazz, I just dislike Miles Davis—or at least Kind of Blue.

Yeah, I'd kind of like to hear some of his stuff as well. I've read enough about it.

Yeah, Mingus Ah Um is probably the easiest to find cheap (it's frequently on sale at places for $9.99 or less), and it's a great place to start.

My favorite Mingus is probably The Black Saint and the Sinner Lady which is kind of like one continuous piece. Really, I like all of the Mingus that I have, but for whatever reason, I'm not crazy about The Clown, mainly for the title track.

Blues & Roots, Pithecanthropus Erectus, and Tijuana Moods are all great. Actually, those six albums are all I have by him, and I've been meaning to get more for a while. The problem with Mingus is that a lot of his stuff is on Impulse! and is pretty expensive (usually like 18.99 in stores).

I echo this statement. II BS might be my favorite jazz tune.

Mingus Mingus Mingus Mingus Mingus is great PERIOD and contains some of the same songs that are on Mingus Ah Um. The original and oft-covered 'Theme for Lester Young' (elsewhere dubbed 'Goodbye Pork Pie hat) and 'Better Git In Your Soul are both found on M.A.U.. What M.A.U doesn't have is the smokin uptempo 'Hora Decubitus' as well as the aforementioned 'II BS', Celia & I X Love. As good as 'Ah Um' might be, MMMMM would be my first choice.

Yeah, this is the one I'd recommend, too. The remaster is really, really good.

I got that "Town Hall Concert" outta the $1.99 bin a few years ago.

I need to get some more of his stuff.

Even though this thread doesn't really seem to reflect it, The Black Saint and the Sinner Lady is hundreds of times better than Mingus Ah Um in my opinion.

Great record -
More than any other, this one reflects the huge influence Duke Ellington had over Charlie.

I'm not adding anything new. I rec Mingus Ah Um. I don't know if you have a Borders nearby, or even if this is a franchisewide thing, but they have a 2 for $22 deal going and among them were bunches of Mingus, Monk, Davis, and other superstars of post-bop & fusion jazz.

I ordered and received from an Amazon Z Shop Mingus' autobiography. Hopefully will be able to crack that on the honeymoon during some down time.

This might have been better to post in the other Mingus thread, but I recently bought Mingus Mingus Mingus Mingus Mingus and Oh Yeah. Both are great, but I feel like Oh Yeah in particular is worth talking about.

It's kind of a weird Mingus album, with him on piano and singing (!) in some capacity on most of it. You can hear him yelling a little hear and their on most ofhis albums, but he doesn't usually come right out and sing. When he does, though, it's pretty cool. It's rough, but soulful and expressive, and it fits really well with the music. I would especially recommend this album to people who aren't really into jazz or just want to hear something really unusual. You should be able to find it pretty cheap, too.
