The Modest Mouse show in Sioux Falls, S.D., featured Brock engaging in some knifeplay, according to the Argus Leader's blog:

Quote:
After wrestling with his guitar and guitar strap, Brock threw his six-string off his body and began uncoiling the microphone cord wrapped around the mic stand in front of him. After spazzing out while singing some quasi-decipherable vocals, Brock stepped back in a frenzy and sliced his chest.

Watching from in front of the opposite side of the stage - but with a clear view of Brock's body - I wasn't close enough to exactly determine what he was doing. But it appeared he had some sort of object in his hand that he used to make two swift cuts on his torso.

Immediately after the frantic moves, the band's bearded stage hand/sound guy/roadie seated to Brock's left jumped on stage and grappled with Brock, making sure the singer's arms couldn't reach his body for further harm. Brock then cooled down a bit, embraced the stage hand and they talked in each other's ears for a second before each released the other and Brock returned to the mic. It all happened in about 10 to 15 seconds.

After the incident, Brock's white T-shirt had two clear slices on its front with blood stains building around the cuts (check out the fuzzy photo posted above, with one of the slices in clear view). Yet, he didn't miss a song and played through several more of the band's tunes before breaking for an encore.

It was odd on several levels - odd that Brock flipped out like a manic Iggy Pop; odd that the band's other five members didn't seem to notice or care about it; odd that most of the 1,600 audience members didn't notice or react to the bloodletting.

He was just date raping himself. Next time, Ike, just follow the lead of Nick Nolte and self-administer Rohypnol. MUCH less bloody.

Isaac Brock, Lead Singer Of Modest Mouse is a character. I guess this just fell into the guidelines of what the character would do to create press and talk going.

exactly...hi, I have an album coming out Tuesday March 20th, watch me cut myself.

I don't respect Brock much as a person. After the alleged rape thing, and the rambling stories of his jailtime, erg. Rather not spend time on him. His music, on the other hand I enjoy casually.

First comes the chest slicing.

Then the fishnet stockings.

Then the $100 contact lens.

Accusation of rape
In March, 1999, a 19-year-old woman filed a police report accusing Brock of rape.[4] Charges were never pressed, and Brock maintains his innocence.[2] In an interview with The Onion A.V. Club[2]

“ It's an allegation that was withdrawn, and of course that didn't get any press. It was complete and utter bullshit, and the whole situation was so complicated that it's hard for me to go into lots of detail. At the time, I figured I'd just shut up and give this young lady enough rope to hang herself, you know? It fucked up my life once, and I'd prefer to just let it go.... Before this all happened, I never believed that anyone would lie about rape. That was my stance: No one lies about this shit. It really made me have to adjust my entire view of people, politics, and my own personal politics. I used to be like, "Kill rapists!" And all of a sudden I have this false allegation against me. I remember totally writing people off that I'd heard had even been in just awkward sexual situations with girls, like "That guy's a fucking prick, I'll never talk to him again." It was weird being on the receiving end of that. A friend of mine who's actually friends with that girl recently told me that she had totally withdrawn having said anything. I only just found out about that myself in the last six months. I knew that basically everyone, up to and including the police, was like, "This is bullshit." This person changed her story depending on who she was talking to. It was really just this fucked-up, weird thing. ”
—Isaac Brock, The Onion A.V. Club

well

he really doesn't seem like much of an actor

doesn't seem to have a genuine interest in fame
isaac doesn't seem to care about anybody but himself and his own god complex

don't know why people would jump to the conclusion that this is some sort of publicity stunt to promote an album when his life has been such an open book of crazy drama ...

IMO he puts it all out there and people to still try to find a way to distort it and it just keeps growing into something crazy

the dude's gonna die young

The only thing I know about Isaac is that he fronts a band that has put out 5 albums (an a few EPs) in 11 years, that I really like. The rape story is a non story that assholes on the internet still bring up for whatever asshole reasons.

We are living in a god damn country that elected Bush to a second term, and now some innocent antics on stage, at a rock show, are supposed to be viewed as 'crazy.'

This is not directed at anybody, but let's have some real facts if we going to call people crazy. Otherwise you wind up sounding like my mom, who thinks people like Robert Smith are crazy, just for wearing the make-up.

the best part is that no one in the audience reacted to it

hmm. Although I couldn't care less if the guy slit his own throat, I wouldn't exactly call slicing your chest with a knife "sane".

It must not have been that much of a chest slicing. Plus I would like to hear at least one other account of the event, aside from the dude with a blog.

You mean you have never sliced your chest and then played a whole set of music? Pussy.

I was just saying that if he did do it, the act of slicing one's chest is not really ever the picture of sanity. The validity of the claims is a separate story and I have nothing add about that.

I was just kidding. It was mainly to get in that line about Nolte. If it makes you feel any better, I do enjoy the new MM album.

I really think the word "crazy" was used more as a lack of vocabulary than anything else. Though, taking a knife to yr chest and inflicting pain isn't exactly what I call mentally stabilized behaviour either. Apples and oranges what crazy to you isn't to me and vice versa. You might think its normal to jam pineapples up yr ass for all I know.

As for the rape thing--sorry, buts its attached to him. The stigma is there. The damage has been done. Its part of the Brock lore. I think we've had the discussion before that one can enjoy music, and not enjoy the person behind it. True enough in this case.
