Dana Altman, Creighton University.

I was utterly shocked when I found out yesterday. Here is a guy in total control of a basketball program that is in one of the most respected Mid-Major conference.
Besides the money, I don't get it. He's going to a school that plays in an incredibly difficult conference with the current two-time defending champion. Not to mention, a program like Kentucky that has always been a perennial power.
While he has been successful in Omaha with the Jays, they had difficulty beating Southern Illinois regularly and never had a Gonzaga or George Mason style run in the NCAA tourney.

What do the other SEC and Hog fans think?

They should have hired Oliver Miller.

You said in that first sentence. As good of a program Creighton is, he's taken it as far as one really could for a mid-major. He's a good coach and wants to compete in one of the toughest major conferences in America. I'd wager that the money is only a small part of it.

Arkansas has a great basketball tradition and TONS of resources. It's a good job.

As far as the SEC, I think with him at Arkansas and whatever coach Kentucky gets (who WILL be good) I think the SEC can make a case for being the best conference in football AND basketball. At least for this calendar year.

The SEC West is in a down period, much like the Big XII North in football. He's walking into a situation where his team will most likely be the favorite to win the SEC West next year. The basketball system at Arkansas is still a very good job, but I will admit, a much tougher situation to deal with.

He supposedly has already convinced SEC Freshman of the Year Patrick Beverly to stick around (he was strongly considering leaving the program). It sounds like Creighton was involved with recruiting both Beverly and Sonny Weems before they chose Arkansas, so they already are familiar with Altman.

Fans around here seem split on the decision. A lot of people think he's no better than Heath was, and that it was just a lateral move for the program. Others like the style of ball he coaches, especially the constant pressure (folks around here are still obsessed with the "40 minutes of hell" that Ricardson brought in). Many think Altman will point Arkansas (somewhat) back in that direction.

I like the decision as a Hog fan, and look forward to seeing him on the sidelines.

While in no way am I comparing Nebraska to Arkansas when it comes to basketball, but people around here were always trying to woo him to coach the huskers or mentioned him as a possible candidate for the job here in Lincoln and he never seemed interested. The rumor was that he was holding out for a much higher profile gig like Kansas or at a Big 10 school.
Just from his previous comments over the years, it just seems he settled short of what everyone expected. I agree with what huskerpunk said about it being a lateral move. I would say Heath's resume at Kent State was much better than Altman's resume going into it now, or at least during their final year of coaching before heading to Fayetteville.
If Altman had left Creighton for Kentucky, I would have said good for him, but I'm not so sure he'll be as successful as he hopes and Arkansas is betting on.

I don't get this. Where the hell is Creighton anyway? I honestly don't know but I DO know that they've had a damn good basketball team for the last few years and have been part of some big upsets. They've also been around the top 25 as well.

If he can bring a small program from obscurity to being on the national radar and playing the tourney regulary why can't he have success in a place with a great fan base and tons of resources?

Creighton is in downtown Omaha, NE. It is a Jesuit school with no football team and serves as the host school for the College World Series. The University also runs an all boys prep school that Conor Oberst and most of the Saddle Creek lads attended.
The Blue Jays were a good basketball team before Altman, they had former Texas A&M coach Tony Barone as their coach and consistantly made the NCAA tourney. It wasn't until they nearly upset Florida the first time they made the Final Four with Mike Miller and White Chocolate that they started getting recognition. That and all the ESPN bracketbuster games they host.

Here's the local article on the issue. I'm glad he admitted money was part of his original decision.

Oh, there's no doubt he's killed before and he'll kill again. Ever wonder what happened to Fred Akers?

I wanna go one record here, as saying that Bob, AKA FT, said those things about MR. Broyles and not I, Senator LooGAR.

Bob Bland, from Allen, TX...you are a son of a bitch.

I bet you'd even insult Darrell Royal.

(Combined, how many people do you think they had killed? Throw in people like Wally Butts, Bear Bryant and Bobby Dodd, and you're in Pol Pot territory)

Allen's just where I work...LOLZ. And, yes...anything and everything Longhorn-related is worthy on relentless ridicule and mockery, including Royal. Of course, the only exception to that rule is TEH TYLER ROSEG, Earl Campbell. He was the baddest of the bad asses.

Well, if by peace with Jesus, you mean, had a fine "April 4th, Memphis" re-enactment, then yes, yes I did.

Smile you son of a bitch, indeed.

Can somebody please explain why Dan Hampton and Cliff Powell just walked up to my cubicle holding rope and a tire iron?
