I have finally, after the near-constant prodding of FT, Kingfish, Dumpjack and Bloor, come way around on this band. CANNOT. GET. ENOUGH.

Bob hooked me up with Separation Sunday -- is this a concept album about drug freaks getting Born Again?

(Not that it takes anything away from it...I like it a lot, and have only heard it twice, but this is my initial perception)

i want to like this band, i really do, but i cant get past how awful the vocals are. however, all i've heard is boys and girls in america, so i dont have much to go off of, but man from what i have heard, terrible vocals.

You won't like 'em any better hearing any other stuff.

I agree. The vocals just don't appeal to me.

Pretty much...which is one of the things I love about it. I like this one best, mostly for the story.

Fuck the Twins and Jack Morris.

I love Boys and Girls in America. I wasn't sold on these guys after their debut but that album is so fucking good.

As much as I like the loud, big riffs I love the fact that it's all about those lost weekends that everyone has in their 20's and how even the smallest events were epic at that age.

Well put, Derris.

Although the crunchy guitars riffs are epic, I think the guy's vocals (and lyrics you can clearly understand) is the best thing a bout the band...

Agreed, the riffs are the bernaise sauce, the lyrics are the filet mignon.

I like the first album the best, as well. They're all good, though.

Separation Sunday is a concept album. Some of the characters in it appear in songs on the other album as well. This is my one current complaint about the Hold Steady. As Craig Finn gets older, the lyrics about teenage kids partying are starting to veer from hip to creepy.

I've said it here before, but Boys & Girls in America is a great record to drive to, especially with the windows down and me being drunk.
