Bonds slams 740 career home run; 15 away from record

Bonds moved within 15 homers of Aaron's record. With two outs in the fourth inning, he sent the first pitch from Yusmeiro Petit (0-1) into the seats in the right-field arcade for his sixth homer of the season.

The 42-year-old Bonds walked out to left field in the top of the fifth to a loud standing ovation, tipping his cap as he made his way to his spot. Fans bowed over the left-field fence.

Petit, called up from Triple-A Tucson before the game to make his second major league start, became the 438th pitcher to give up a homer to Bonds.

Bonds flied out and struck out looking in his other two at-bats, but his home run and Pedro Feliz's shot leading off the third led the Giants to their season-best fifth straight victory.

I thought Gehrig's record was the most hallowed before Ripken blew that shit apart.

Any guesses as to when he'll reach #755?

I'm more concerned about the abomination of Sammy reaching #600. Someone should check his bat.

Hell, he's almost hitting .200. Something must be wrong!

I dunno. HRs are kinda like slam dunks. There are many people who can do it, and only a few who do them with a flair.

Personally, I focus more on feats of stamina. Hitting season .400, etc.

Hitting .400 is the only thing that impresses you? Have you not followed baseball since 1941?

Well, considering no one since 1941 has hit .400 in a season, it seems fairly impressive to me. I do appreciate older eras of baseball. I don't get off on HR records. Sorry. Sure, I love it when the Orioles hit them, but I'm not a bean counter. My point is though, we live in an era where HRs are a dime a dozen. You can be pretty much assured that one's going to be hit in a game. I could be wrong (someone look this up), but its my perspective.

Plus, what's better for a team--a player going 4-4 in a game, or going 1-4 and hitting a HR. If that HR wins the game, great, but they all aren't clutch.

yeah but you could also make a case that those HR hitters get a lot of pop flies and strike outs. i'd rather see a one-run single than some guy swing for the fence and whiff.

Outs are bad. Good point.

Aaron himself has said that "records are meant to be broken" which I'd say negates the whole "hallowed" aspect; I think the sooner that the world accepts that Barry is going to break the record (cheapened for sure, but broken nonetheless) the better.

Speaking of 1941, DiMaggio's 56 game hit streak is a great record that will probably never be broken.

Should have been a 73-games hit streak, too. But, Ken Keltner, man... Fuckin' Ken Keltner.

The unbreakable "record", though? Johnny van der Meer's consecutive no-hitters. Will never be touched. But nice try, Buehrle.

I'm in total agreement. I'm tired of being inundated by what is essentially a dead story while watching sports news. If A-Rod or Pujols stay healthy and continue hitting homeruns at the pace they are in their careers, Bonds's record probably won't last a decade.
I'd be far more excited about someone accomplishing the triple crown, batting .400 or breaking the DiMaggior record than I would be any HR related record these days.
