...someone other than me!

does anyone know what kind of application/effects he and similar artists use for processing and "cutting up" their guitar tracks? we're beginning the rhythm tracks for the bon savs full-length this weekend, which means we'll start guitars in a month or so...i would really like to be able to emulate this stuff live and using only pedals, not a laptop, but i suspect that might be tough.

any ideas?

I think you should add that xylophone track to "Why This Would Never Work Between Us" live as well.

seriously, KPH there is a way you can emulate that sound, but it's not easy. The effect you're trying to emulate is called a "slicer" effect. Look for a Tremolo pedal that can do a square wave (rather than a sine wave), like the Boss TR-2. It gets pretty fast, but not quite into ring modulation territory (and while it might not be the absolute best tremolo, it does a decent job).

get pro tools or logic. many artists use them live for fx on guitars and instruments [muse, oceansize, fennesz, mogwai, ulrich schnauss].

yeah, i've messed around with some outboard trem plug-ins and effects, which did get me in the direction i wanted to go, but that was pure studio. the problem is controlling the frequency on the fly - outside of twisting nobs, i would need a foot pedal of some kind to control the modulation.

i think graham coxon was headed in the right direction with his sound on the s/t blur record, esp. with that stuttering guitar line from "on your own." i'm not looking to do anything that aggressive, more...just having the ability to "stutter" the delay at a moment's notice, the way you would hit an overdrive pedal.

thanks for the tip!

d - we're using protools for our entire initial tracking, so if i wanted to invest the time, i could utilize that + the myriad plug-in effects we have available (go my friends!) to get a fennesz sound during the mix...and i probably will mess around with that, even if it amounts to little more than ctrl-c, ctrl-v. but i definitely want to get something organic going live...johnny greenwood had something he was using on the Hail tour in 03, which impressed me. it was like prefuse 73 stepped in and took over the guitar solo, but without any overlapping delay signals and blends...very clean.
