animal collective - riyl?

also, while we are at it, hit me with a madvillain riyl too.

lastly, as a suggestion to shmoo and all you listmakers out there, on future polls, we sould include a riyl now that we have blurbs and all.

oh, and one last final thing is that if you would like to add a few words of admiration toward my beloved pats or red sox, feel free to do so as well.

How do you even begin to categorize Animal Collective?

Sung Tongs is really a fun CD with so many likeable magic pop moments scattered throughout. Kind of like Stephin Merritt's sprawling magnum opus 69 Love Songs in that respect. Except in this case only one disc of goodness. At first it seemed a bit on the strange side, odd songs stitched together and punctuated with wonderfully inventive melodies and sounds. Lots of sounds. Fragile vocal harmonies. Nylon string guitars. Lots of acoustic guitars. Bubbling noises in the background reminiscent of Sparklehorse. Beatles psychedelia that brings to mind the playful inventiveness of Olivia Tremor Control and some of the other Elephant 6 collective. Some Simon and Garfunkel feel to it as well. Maybe you could call it contemporary folk music mixed with what some are calling indietronica, the modern blend of indie pop and electronica. Sounds a little goofy, I know. And I guess it is to a certain degree. But I've also found it to be highly addictive. It's the type of music that becomes almost like part of your environment, but not in a Eno-esque ambient background sense. This music is always interesting and in your thoughts, even though it seems to gently flow by without demanding your full attention.

animal collective riyl: najavo celebratory songs. seriously. in my music culture class we've been doing all native american stuff, and i was like "holy shit its animal collective"

but really. Holy Modal Rounders are the only band who I can think are even close. (for "Sung Tongs" at least)

Animal Collective...try Black Dice, since they've toured together.
