How do people feel about this? I don't mean an artist performing the album they just put out, but more the Slint and GZA and the Pitchfork thing, Brian Wilson's dealie...
Is this really justified? Certainly it's not much difference from, say, Frankie Valli, but isn't that disappointing in itself? Discuss.

I think it has its place.

First example to come to mind is Pink Floyd performing either the entirety or big pieces of Dark Side or The Wall in concert because they naturally fit together.

And didn't The Who do a tour performing Quadrophenia a few years ago?

Don't diss Frankie Valli. Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons' stuff from the early 60s kicks ass.

One of the better concerts I recall seeing featured an album in its entirety. It was Lou Reed touring his New York album. He did the whole album from start to finish with appropriate stage setups. Then, he took an intermission while they stripped the stage down and he came back out adn performed like a greatest hits deal, starting with his most recent material and going back through his solo catalog. Then, he came out after that for an encore of Velvet Underground material.

I'm not so sure I'd want to just hear a single album and nothing else from too many people, unless its someone where I only like one of their records or something. but, if they do the album and then give you some other stuff as well, I'm all for it.

And Col. Les Claypool's Fearless Flying Frog Brigade covering Pink Floyd's Animals is probably one of the better shows I've seen. I know this is getting a tad off course of what Cotton is saying, but still. It was pretty damn good.

The Fuzzy Sprouts doing Abby Road was damned incredible.

yeah, but PF did that when the album was released. or else they did like 2-3 songs together on that last tour I guess, but let's face it that was pretty ramshackle anyway. Roger Waters touring performing Dark Side as I type this, fits the bill here.

and yeah, the Who did do that and it pissed me off, despite loving it.

I saw Love do "Forever Changes" in its entirity twice and do "Da Capo" in its entirity once. I like the concept. I'm an album guy not a song guy so I like hearing the songs as a cohesive set if they are intended that way or work best that way. Also at least you know what you are in store for....hate going and being really disappointed with the set list.

I'd shit my pants if I went to a Stones show and they played Let It Bleed or Exile in its entirety...shit, if they had the balls to do Dirty Work I'd jump up onstage and hug them, taking a beating notwithstanding.

You know Tim and Dave are still touring this show? I saw it back in February and it was still amazing. They just put together a Sgt. Peppers show to celebrate its 40th Anniversary. I didn't catch that one.

i was at a record release show last year that sounded like the lou reed show from above. it was for the new bobby conn album. he played the whole album, sans the spoken word track, pretty close to how it really is. then he came out a few minutes later and did another set of just covers. good show.

I did not know that.

I also saw them do Ziggy Stardust once but I was REALLY messed up so I'm not sure how great it was. I "remember" it as great though.

Ziggy Stardust is always great...bartender put it on a couple weeks back around closing time and ended up stuck with a little group of us nursing beers until it was over.

yeah, but that's exactly it. Isn't that just sort of a bullshit nostalgia grab? I guess that's what going to a Stones show is to begin with, but I feel like this is for an entirely new audience to say they were there when whatever band played this seminal album in its entirety. Which, in addition to bringing out all the scenester retards that will sit in the back of the club and brag about how much better it was in '89 or whatever, it also is just sort of artistically backpeddling.
I'm sure I'd be psyched to see the Stones play Exile, but without Mick Taylor there confused as fuck, Mick with visible coke-mouth, incoherent Keith... Wyman with a 13 year old girl...without these things I think I'd ultimately feel patronized. Wouldn't that sort of negate the entire '72 tour?

I mean, I'd rather see a Chuck E. Cheese animatronic setup* perform that album than those leather muppets.

*mental note. set up "living displays" of animatronic animals performing classic albums. patent pending.

I can see it both ways, but let me say it was pretty cool to see Girls Against Boys play Venus Luxure No. 1 Baby in it's entirety last year.

I'm pretty sure I heard Beagles versions of many Beatles songs before hearing the originals. "Hard Day's Night" in particular. Working like a dog, get it?

I wouldn't mind seeing a band do an entire album live, as long as I knew that's what I was in for.

This is my feeling as well. Like, I wouldn't mind going and seeing Sonic Youth perform Daydream Nation. Even though it is far from my favorite SY album.

However, if the show isn't billed that way I'd be kind of pissed.

In a similar vein, it drives me crazy when an artist only plays new songs live. Sure, I realize that there are a number of good, valid reasons for doing that, but that doesn't mean I never want to hear the old stuff live. Shuffle it up, for crying out loud.
