I was at the asian market to pick up some fish to make some hand rolls and sashimi and whatnot. So I pick up a hunk of tuna, a hunk of salmon, some eel. And then at the end of the row, I notice this weird yellow-orange stuff that kind of looks like tongue. I take a look, and it's labelled "uni." I've seen it on the menu at sushi places all the time but it's one of those items that's seasonably priced so I've never even asked how much it was, but I've always been intrigued by it. It's $6.99 for the little tub of it, so I figured why not.

Got home to taste it and it's absolutely freaking disgusting. It has this slimy, phlegm texture and a bitter, somewhat slightly fishy aftertaste that doesn't leave your mouth for a long, long time. Even after eating some wasabi and ginger the taste still remained. Huge let down, and I really recommend again anyone trying this ever. I can't fathom how this food item is popular anywhere.

I thought you were going to say "unicycles" and I would have agreed, "yeah, big mistake."

Uni is gelled fish shit. Didn't you know that?

And oh, yeah- eating wasabi and ginger together will give you a violent case of the runs. Brace yourself.

This is not true. It's sea urchin gonads.

This has to be false. You know how these things are served together on every plate of sushi ever bought in the United States? Tens of millions of people have eaten these things together and I'm sure this would be bigger news were it true.

People either love it or hate it.
I tried it once and had the same gagging, nastyass reaction.

And yeah, it's sea urchin.

Most sushi chefs will tell you that you're a true sushi aficionado if you can eat uni. The first time I tried it, it looked like baby shit and pretty much made me gag when I tasted it. Definitely not for me. I've had it again since then...while still not something I'd order, it was a bit more tolerable.

Ugh, poor you. Had some when I lived in NZ - this girl and I were walking to a seal colony and ran across some folks (illegally) fishing it and they gave us some. So, so, so nasty, Ten years have gone by and I can still taste it a little. You're just ruined food, forever.

I like to consider myself a sushi aficionado. I can eat it I just didn't enjoy it. I'd also like to try some really fresh straight from the sea stuff because it's supposed to be slightly sweet, which is very different from this shit I've got

I hate sea urchin, but I think I've only had it cooked in a Korean pasta dish.

It was all covered up in sauce/seasoning and mixed in with an assortment of seafood. When I ate one, it was just this tough little ball that I couldn't really chew. I bit into it and something salty squirted out and into the back of my mouth. I spat out as much of it as I could. I had no idea what it was, and my first impule was that it could either be an eyeball or a testicle.

Proud NON-sushi afficianado here.

Ugh, how anyone would eat that slimy, foul shit is beyond me.

the topic should say, you bought some BAD uni... big mistake

yes, bad uni is a big mistake, tastes and texture is like the inside of a dirty fishbowl...

good uni on the other hand is sweet and delicious... Probably my favorite sushi. just double check with the chef that its good and fresh...

getting a tub from a market? that's the mistake...

I've had it fresh from the live sea urchin at a fish market on the redondo beach pier, now that is good stuff!

Some surfer enhanced dood I ran into while living in in SF, CA, once said ,"It's so good it taste like a barnacle on a whale." Well being from Florida I had done the whole barnacle scraping off of boat bottoms since I was like 7. I was over that. No Uni Fo Me.

that's another clue... uni in most places, if they have it, costs that much for a typical order....
