I'm planning on a little road trip in a couple of weeks to see Okkervil River. I can either see 'em on a Saturday night in Concord, NH, or Sunday at a bar in Providence.

The Saturday / NH gig = classy theatre, no standing, no dancing. $25.

Sunday/ RI gig = a bar, probably be a more energetic vibe. $12.

I am thinking that the bar gig would be better, but the Saturday show is closer to me, and I won't have to take any time off of work to make it.

So, I am asking those of you who have seen the band... would I be missing out on a lot of the live Okkervil experience by sitting in a theatre?

Fuck it, it's a stupid question. I know I would.

From what I have read, I don't think they are super rollicking live. + We just saw The Drive By Truckers at a Theater setting with "silence requested" and it was all acoustic and all amazing.

I would do both if I had the means and the time, brah.

I've only seen them in the small bar setting. The most memorable show being their performance with John Vanderslice here in Lincoln. They are playing in Omaha again in September at one of the new venues, so the audience should be alot larger than the previous Nebraska gigs.
To actually answer your question, I would definitely want to see the Theatre gig, but agree with Loogs by saying go see both if you can.

they are pretty great live and songs like "black" and the live arrangement of "it ends with a fall" (so much better than the one on record) will get people moving. i'd go to the bar gig.

I'd see both, but I'm also a Will Sheff junkie.

No matter what show you see, it's going to be awesome, so do whatever causes the least headache for you.
