I thought we agreed that "Putting On The RItz" was the worst band ever

Um... well that got me out of retirement.

WTF?

I can't even "mount" a defense here, because I'm having trouble believing you're being sincere.

I'm a big fan but I will be the first to tell you that they have released some absolute garbage throughout the years...emperor tomato ketchup is top 20 of all time though.

Saw them in Dublin once in the 90s. Excellent.

i can sort of hear how people could like them, but i can't stand this blippy bloopy gibberish crap and someone seems to put it on the office stereo at least once a day.

I've never given these guys a proper shot, but to be honest of the 20 or so songs I've heard (including most of ETK), I wasn't really feeling it.

This from the guy who thinks "The Dipset" can rhyme :) I agree a bit, some of Sterolab's songs are 2 blippy bloppy, but they do have some pretty good tunes and their live shows are pretty f'n fun. Plus one of their members got ran over by a car man, give them a break..

dipset can rhyme
they do it all the time
you can tell when they rhyme
'cause they words start to rhyme
which is all the time
check your watch for the time
and you can see that the time
is this time
when they rhyme

Actually Van Halen gets my vote.

Stereolab has always been disappointing to me, just 'cause first I heard them was some 12" that I really, really liked and subsequent purchases haven't lived up to that. But, tons of other shit is worse to me.

it seems like harmless background music the first few times, but the more you listen the more you hear satan. thankfully there are no melodies to get suck in your head.

Love that song.
And I really enjoyed them in the 90's, especially Mars Audiac Quintet.

yes! every newbie that I've given that record to has said that they started to sing along in french by track 5. that's without any of them knowing any french, of course.

No one needs a lot of Stereolab, but most of us should make room for a little. MAQ being the obvious place to go.

Hey, they've got a song called "Low Boob Oscillator". How bad can they be?

Personally, I prefer Komeda.

When they're on, they're one of my all time favorites. When they're not so on, I get bored pretty quick. They were really inconsistent live, but I still went to see them all the time in the 90s. Absolutely awful on the ETK tour, but vital - hypnotic - during the Peng/Transient period. I thought they really rounded out nicely by the early 00s, but I haven't seen them since Mary Hansen died.

Stereolab that I keep in the iPod:
Transient
ETK
Sound-Dust
A few tracks from Mars and Margerine
misc. Switched On stuff

I think they are brilliant. Not all the lyrics are stellar but a lot of their lyrics are actually quite insightful (read: proletariat). Plus they have the best "la la'ing" around and are carrying the torch of some great older bands like The Free Design.
