I bought a french press over the weekend and it resulted in probably the two best cups of coffee I've ever had in my entire life. In fact, I'm having starbucks coffee right now and I'm disgusted. It's ruined coffeee for me.

I've been using one of those for years, and I absolutely agree with you. I usually have espresso in the mornings during the week, but when I have time to drink a couple cups, I always use a press. I'd be lost without one.

Maybe this eliminates me from the folds of the coffee snobs, but I've always found press coffee to be a bit oily for my tastes. I prefer drip. I like good coffee, but drip has always been my style.

A French Press combined with some Intelligentsia New Guinea is heaven. Seattle is all about the espresso but for I'm left dissapointed being a lowly drip coffee drinker.

yep, french press coffee rules. my recipe for coffee success:

1. real coarse grind. i have a crappy blade grinder which does things really unevenly. i'm planning on getting a burr grinder eventually.
2. boil water and let stand 1 minute.
3. dump coffee into carafe and let soak with some hot tap water.
4. pour in boiled water.
5. put lid on carafe and let stand for 1-2 minutes.
6. take lid off and stir coffee, this get's all the stuff that floats to the top to mix in.
7. let stand for another minute then press.
8. drink.

My prob is that I keep dropping/breaking the carafes. I may have to bust down & fork out for a Lexan one, but those probably cause cancer.

Generally, what are some good roasts? I bought a lb. of Italian roast from a local coffee shop and it's amazing.

I like the Freedom Press Coffee Maker, but never use it.

We've got a combo grinder/coffee maker with a timer (which is a huuuuuge plus). The Press is a pain in the neck to clean, and the one I have doesn't make enough for two people to have two cuppas. That said, it does make superior coffee.

Is this one of those 'I'll call it a freedom press intstead of french press because I hate the french' type things?

Please say that it's not.

I love my french press - usually just use it on the weekends because i'm too cro-magnon on the weekday mornings to handle it without becoming a burn unit victim.

but i really need a good burr grinder to do it up right, i'm tired of sight grinding using my blade grinder.

in addition, if any of you has an old westbin poppery air popcorn popper sitting around in yr attic or garage i'm looking to hack one and do some of my own coffee bean roasting.

between this and my stovetop espresso maker i'm a caffeine-luddite. tastes great, though.

Lockness, so happy to hear you have come over to the dark side. Whoahahahahaha! I am an unabashed espresso fiend myself. Welcome.

French Presses rule! Until I got my Saeco Espresso machine, it was the only way I'd drink my morning cup.

I like it strong, so I usually put three tbsps of coffee per 8-ozs of water and let it sit for 5 minutes before pressing. The only problem is keeping the coffee hot...one solution is to fill the cup you're going to use with boiling water and let it sit until you're ready to pour the coffee.

I only use my French Press on nights, weekends and days off. I can't make as much coffee as I drink usually, so I go with my coffeemaker. A good grinder is really what does it for me. I hate to drink store brands when I can grind some Tanzania Peaberry, Guatemalan Antiguan or Ugandan Fair trade.

Oh... sooooo jealous. That will be the first thing I will purchase when/if I ever make some sort of decent wage. A fancy espresso machine and wicked backyard are my two main materialistic goals.

Wow! That's a beauty. This is the one I got for Christmas this year...

Not the top of the line, but still makes a fine cup of coffee.

I was given a French Press for Christmas 2003 and love, love it! I don't drink that much coffee, but when at home and craving a nice cuppa...this definitely satisfies my need.
