I currently have 17,010 songs on my iPod, so I thought it might be fun to set it to shuffle and post about the first song that comes up each day. You are more than welcome to comment on each song, but keep in mind that because this is my iPod, probably more than 15,000 of these 17,010 songs are not Obner-approved and are likely to subject me to massive, unrelenting ridicule. Bring it on.

Today's song:

"Lady Writer" by Dire Straits

By far the most popular songs from what is by far their least popular album (1979's Communique), this track certainly deserved a better fate. Unlike 90% of their hits, this one has not been overplayed, so it's still a pleasure to hear it after all these years. With a catchy riff and great sing-along lyrics ("Just the way that her hair fell down around her face / And I recall my fall from grace"), this probably ranks in my Top 10 favorite Knopler-involved songs.

this looks like fun. I've got 12013 songs on my ipod.

All Night by Sam Phillips
Phillips started off in the Christian industry under the name Leslie. It didn't take too long for her to tire of the sexism and microscope that the industry utilized in the 80s and jumped ship to the mainstream, changing her name to her childhood nickname. A couple more pop albums before she changed her sound to the bare-bones, Tom Waits-esque shambling folk of her recent material.

this is a good idea but you should just update the songs play by play instead of just once a day

I think "Lady Writer" is their best song, actually.

Bobbo,
Want me to sub on days you miss since I've got your old iPod with its library still intact?

Great idea, Chad! Heck, why not just join in daily, whenever you can.

It's definitely better than the masses would have you think. Love Over Gold is really the only turd in the Knopfler punch bowl, and that's even got the outstanding "Industrial Disease."

JESUS!

I haven't put my Ipod on shuffle in forever but because of this thread I did it today and the first damn song to come up was:

"He Stopped Loving Her Today" - George Jones

Possibly the greatest country song ever but christ if it isn't mouthful of shotgun sad. Now I need a shower.

If you're going to do this every day, you're going to have to date them in the title, you know.

Today's song:

"I Spoke as a Child" by Todd Snider

This comes from the only Todd Snider album I have, Songs for the Daily Planet, which is such a great album it's a mystery to me why I've never looked into any of his other releases. But as far as this song is concerned, it's not among my favorites from this album. He's going for straight poignancy with this one, and he's much, much better when working with a smirk on his face. I love his upbeat stuff a lot more than this rather dreary outing.

Christ, Derris. I'd have just packed my bags on gone home if that was the first song on shuffle.

I'm not trying to be an a-hole or anything. It's just redundant to type the date right below where the date is already displayed, isn't it?

As soon as I get a new iPod I'm in on this.

Seems like there should be a way to work this into HipD, huh? ;)

Without having ever heard this song, I can guarantee it's not as good as the completely-unrelated "Manitoba" by Frank Black, which is one of my favorites by him.
