Could you turn down a whopping $75 million for to reunite your influential band? Well, whether for love or money, Morrissey has reportedly done just that. Morrissey's publicist has confirmed the artist refused a $75 million offer to tour under the Smiths name in 2008 and/or 2009, with the only mandate being that Smiths guitarist Johnny Marr would be part of the band. The Smiths also declined a multi-million dollar offer to perform in recent years at the Coachella Valley

Perhaps he could be lured by having Art Brut signed as their openers for the tour, with a contract rider ensuring ample quantities of Hennessey before each show.

Isn't it that he doesn't want anything to do with Joyce?

He seems to get along okay with Marr now.

yeah, joyce and rourke are on his shit list. i think the issue here is he has said so many times that he doesn't want to reform the smiths that if he ends up taking the money, then he's definitely a sellout and even the superfans (see: passions just like mine) will see through it.

i seem to recall a few years ago some guy tried putting in his will that he wanted morrissey and marr to get back together, but they didn't go for it.

You and I don't have that kind of money, but I'm sure he doesn't need it. He's been playing music and touring for years and almost always sells out, so I'm sure he's set with loot till death. I'd still like to see a reunion though..

I know he does well and I applaud him for not taking it, yet I have to wonder how you can still be so pissed at former bandmates after all these years. I would think that a lengthy solo career would be enough for one man to let a past issues go.

It hasn't been that long since Morrisey and Marr were court ordered to share some of the loot from the Smiths with Joyce and Rourke..I think the trial was in 99 or 2000.

The trial was in 1996 according to wikipedia, and it sounds like Joyce is the only one who continues to annoy Morrissey.

Perhaps he's just "over" the Smiths.

Nope. Although they had been building some bridges Morrissey and Marr had a big fall out after the court case when Morrissey claimed Marr had tried to shift the 'blame' on to him.

Also a few years back Q ran a 'Top 100 Richest Rock Stars' and Morrissey was on there with an estimated fortune of $40 million....and that was before his highly successful 'Quarry' come back.

Fair to say that he doesn't need the cash.

Jeff Tweedy from the stage of the Greek Theater in Berkeley last night: "People please, I beg you, please stop saying 'I loves me some..' just don't do it, don't say 'I loves me some Wilco', stop it, just don't do it...."

And maybe Morrissey just doesn't want to do it... this idea that anybody will do anything if the money's right and they are stupid not to because it's money that is what's most important is sickening. I loves me some self-righteousness.

Reforming The Smiths would lose Morrissey his Mexican fan base.

Agreed, I've been on the internet more and more lately. I never thought I'd miss my Jesuit high-school language nazis, but the world needs more of them.

As someone without a job, I'd give up my self-righteousness for a chance to do 'anything if the money's right' in a second. The money wouldn't even have to be all that right.

After I climb back up Maslow's hierarchy again, self-righteousness will take its proper place again though.

Douchebag McMigraine can rest assured in the fact that I have not, nor will I ever, say, "I loves me some A Ghost is Born."

I thought that Darrin made this point with his allusion to some vocalist with a Latino seeming name waiting in the wings.

Jose Maldonado is the 'Morrissey' in the leading (perhaps only) Smiths tribute band.

I saw them once and proved that, provided you drink enough Aftershocks, any tawdry old imitation can seem like the real thing.
