I'm sure we've done this before, but it's been a while, and this Okkervil River jernt does this several times in "Plus Ones".

BRING 'EM OUT!

Warren Zevon, "Play It All Night Long" ("Sweet Home Alabama")
Steve Earle, "Hard-Core Troubadour" (Springsteen's "Rosalita")
Tom Petty, "Runnin' Down a Dream" (Del Shannon's "Runaway")

Damn, I can't think of any right now except:

Jimmy Eat World "The Authority Song" (Mellencamp's "Authority Song")
Bicycle Thief "It's Raining (4am)" (Irma Thomas' "It's Raining")
Genya Ravan "Jerry's Pigeons" ("Da Doo Ron Ron" + a bunch of others)

Well, 6 songs in, this mixtape is shaping up nicely.

"Sweet Home Alabama" and "Rosalita" are two of my all-time favorites; I should give those two other songs a listen. A fresh listen with the Zevon song, because I didn't know. I guess you could use "Sweet Home Alabama" on its' own, since it refers to "Southern Man."

Paul Westerberg: "Good Day" (The Replacement's "Hold My Life")
Richmond Fontaine: "Making it Back" (The Pogues' "Summer In Siam")
Big Star: "Thirteen" (The Rolling Stones' "Paint It Black")

Well, technically, Oasis' "Hello" references The Stones' "Sweet Virginia":

"So wipe the shit from your shoes"

But I don't know if that counts or not?

Jimmy Eat World does this a lot.
"A Praise Chorus" alone references "Our House," by Madness, "Don't Let's Start" by TMBG, "Crimson and Clover" by Tommy James & The Shondells and "Kickstart My Heart" by Motley Crue.
And I'm probably missing some.

Sure as hell counts, and I'm gonna toss out Paul Westerberg's "Kickin' the Stall" (Stones' "Bitch").

In modest mouse's "missed the boat," Isaac brock does his best Robert Smith on, "All our favorites were playin' so we could shake, shake! Shake, Shake, Shake!"
