Beastie Boys are among the nominees for the 2008 Rock'n'Roll Hall of Fame. They, along with Madonna, John Mellencamp, Leonard Cohen, Afrika Bambaataa, Chic, the Ventures, Donna Summer and the Dave Clark Five on the ballot. Five of those will be inducted on March 10, 2008, at New York's Waldorf Astoria Hotel.

Formed in 1979 as a hardcore/punk act which shared the stage with the likes of the Bad Brains, thee Dead Kennedys and Reagan Youth, the Beastie Boys went on to reinvent themselves as a rock-tinged hip hop act with Licensed to Ill in 1986 and released a number of classic, genre-bending records including Paul's Boutique, Check Your Head, Ill Communication, Hello Nasty, To the 5 Boroughs and most recently, The Mix-Up.

If Madonna, the Beastie Boys and those disco assholes gets in before the Stooges, this well, would be exactly right wouldn't it? Jesus fucking christ, what a goddamn joke.

It's a scam, but it's a successful one. People like us debate this every single year regardless.

Wow, I didn't know there was so much hate for the Beasties.
The Stooges should be in and I won't argue against it, but good or bad, The Beasties have had a major impact on the recent history of pop music.
They helped spawn Rap Rock, which is typically quite terrible, but they also showed nerdy white kids it was ok to be into the Rap Culture and have aided in the career resurrection of Bad Brains and Lee Perry.
From this list I would go with:
Leonard Cohen
Afrika Bambaata
John Mellencamp
Dave Clark Five
Beastie Boys

I'm not against the beasties.

I'm just against the rock hall for it's inconsistencies and inability to follow the prerequisites for induction that they set down for themselves.

for some sweet remixes, check out www.beastiebeats.com

The eligibility date is based on first release, not first album, so perhaps they had a single out in '83.

Pitchfork pointed out that Abba, among others, aren't in. The others they named (Tom Waits, T-Rex, Stooges, and some other) may be deserving, but I'm really surprised Abba isn't in.

Meanwhile, I think it's hilarious how they keep adding these oldies bands. Dave Clark Five and the Ventures? In a hall of fame?

Yeah..the Ventures are only like the most successful instrumental rock group of all time. Why on Earth would anyone mention them?

O.k. so 82 would be 25 years, but Madonna is still 83 with singles and album, which is not 25 years.
