A friend of mine is having a HS reunion and is supplying participants w/ discs of '77 hits, but he's putting a little twist on it by having them be cover songs.

Any ideas out there for '77 cover tunes and/or links?

Thanks!

Are you looking for later covers of hits from 1977, or 1977 covers of earlier songs? Is 1977 supposed to be the year of the original, or the cover?

Here's a list of hits from 1977 to use as a starting point.

Some of these I don't condone, but all of the songs were from '77:

Beat Farmers "Lucille" (Kenny Rogers)
The Yayhoos "Dancing Queen" (Abba)
The Volebeats "Knowing Me, Knowing You" (Abba)
Faith No More "Easy" (The Commodores)
Linda Ronstadt "Allison" (Elvis Costello)
Die Totenhosen "Born to Lose" (Heartbreakers)
Motley Crue "Anarchy in the UK" (Sex Pistols)
REM "Strange" (Wire)
The Prissteens "The Whole Wide World" (Wreckless Eric)

Like Radcliffe, I can't condone all of these:

Seal "Fly Like An Eagle" (Steve Miller Band)
Shudder To Think "So Into You" (Atlanta Rhythm Section)
Run DMC "Walk This Way (Aerosmith)
Radiohead "Nobody Does It Better" (Carly Simon)

Or you could just put on a Rancid album.

Yeah, but Springsteen's version is from before '77, so the Manfred Mann version isn't a cover of a song from '77, it's a cover that came out in '77. That's a whole different, lengthy list.

"Marquee Moon" - Kronos Quartet (Television)
"He's a Whore" - Big Black (Cheap Trick)

Maybe too mellow/highbrow and too abrasive, respectively, but it's all I can come up with at the moment.

A band called Ash has an album called 1977 that features some covers from, yes, 1977. They also have a b-side of the Cantina Song from Star Wars.

Someone should mention this to Tim Wheeler, cuz I'm sure it'd surprise him.

I need you to justify to me why this wasn't on the monger covers project, or even in the slushpile?!?

Megadeth - Anarchy in the UK (Sex Pistols)
Dwarves - That's Rock'n'Roll (Shaun Cassidy) I honestly don't know the original, but I'm pretty sure the Dwarves take liberties.
The Clash s/t album - see any number of tribute albums
