I'm having a tough time coming up with one myself. I guess I'd have to go with Band of Horses because I really didn't care for their debut and I've been enjoying Cease to Begin quite a bit lately.

Akron/Family - Love Is Simple

just a really unique sound to their album.

The Angelic Process (thankyou, petecockroach). A fucking immense sound that came out of nowhere.

Most pleasant surprise: Rogue Wave
They've always fallen a little short for me before, but I really love this new one.

Most surprising disappointment: The Shins
Edges out both JV and nU pr0n, because (in retrospect) their uneven previous releases (Pixel Revolt and Twin Cinema, respectively) foreshadowed the turds they dropped this year, whereas my hopes for Wincing The Night Away were through the roof...yet the finish product barely escaped the basement.

Future of the Left - Curses

I wasnt' expecting something as immediate and engaging as McLusky, but it is.

This is so fucked up. The JV, Shins, and New Pornographers albums are great, and that new Rogue Wave (I'm a big fan of theirs) is pretty much crap. You need to listen to the others over and over and over again. Because if you like the Rogue Wave over those other albums, you gots problems.

same here. the demos/singles never hinted at how good the album would be.

I came pretty close to being with you on this, but I gave 'Wincing the Night Away' another chance last week and it hit me. I'm now on the verge of really liking it.

well I just bought Kings of Leon, and based on how much it got ripped from quite a few people, I am pleasantly surprised.

Though it still takes the bronze in The Shins' catalog, I have to admit this is infintely better than I originally thought. Back then, I pretty much thought "Phantom Limb" was the only song worth a crap on this album. But having recently revisited it, there's probably 5-6 other really good songs here.

The one that really stands out now compared to then is "Girl Sailor."

Anyway, sorry about that, Shins! My bad.
