I'm not all that big a fight fan, but how can you not know Schmeling and his legendary bouts with Joe Louis? Christ, I didn't even know the guy was still alive.

Interesting guy. Nazis used him as evidence of Aryan superiority, but he in no way supported them and there is a ton of evidence of the lengths he went to to help Jews.

After the war he bought a license to the Coca Cola franchise in Germany and became rich.

When Joe Louis became destitute Schmeling reportedly sent him money and paid for his funeral.

I had heard about this. I think HBO did a doc in recent (past 5 years) about his bouts with Louis. I think people like this (who let the system use them, but buck in their own ways) are extremely interesting in the annals of history.

Had NO IDEA homeboy was still alive (until, apparently, yesterday)

Still knew he was alive and kickin' since I saw a documentary on PBS about the Louis/Schmeling fight 2 weeks ago. Since the Jack Johnson doc was so good I decided to check that one aswell.

99 years. That's a motherfuckin' long time to be hanging around. Guess it's his coke money and those strong german genes that kept him alive so long. :-)
