I have met and spoke with his dad on several occassions during State Tournaments and when he worked Ribfest. He's an amazing guy who has done more than most people I know who aren't disabled.
It was huge for him to see his kid pitch at Yankee Stadium, especially after Joba initially played D-II Baseball and then walked on at Nebraska.

I figured I would post this since we have a large number of baseball fans and some New Yorkers.

is this really national sports news? no disrespect. i just think it's odd for this to be a top story on yahoo and the like.

he does sound like an interesting guy, though.

Harlan became a bit of a minor celebrity around the Yankee parts since last August.... The papers here made it very obvious how close he and Joba were...A real feel good story, especially how Joba has become arguably the most popular Yankee after Jeter these days.....I hope he is better soon, for Joba's sake and selfishly for the Yanks sake.

I think Twilight Kid answered it better than I could have, since I wasn't aware of his minor celebrity status in NYC. Joba does receive alot of media coverage these days on shows like Sports Center. I don't know if he is as good as hyped, but he is damn good middle reliever who I believe will end up becoming a damn good closer.

I was also surprised it was receiving national coverage, when the local paper didn't even have anything about it this morning.

I think Yankee fans have been starved for a pitching phenom....It is still a bit early to truly tell, but in his first 30 innings or so of major league work (outside of the Cleveland midge playoff fiasco), he has only given up 1 earned run. (career era as of now 0.31 in 30+ innings).

so far so good.

plan right now is to convert him to a starter in the second half of the year as his innings are being limited to 140 in 2008....I think thats a bit crazy...If the Yanks are in a playoff race, they are gonna use him when needed....

I'd keep him in relief for this year at least, unless Hughes or Kennedy really sputter out.
