So I was at the guitar shop last night, fooling around with qa resonator guitar that was in Open "G". GodDAMN that was fun.

So, open G is what?
G B D G D G?

What are the open tunings you all use and how often?

I've kinda avoided them because I hate tuning and re-tuning my guitar, and I can't afford to go buy another guitar that is just for open tunings. But I'm thinking it's time I start to rethink my position.

No open tuning here; just standard and drop-D.

Open G: D G D G B D

Open D: D A D F# A D

DADGAD is DADGAD

<----wants to someday be, in addition to a bassist, a 95-year-old African-American slide guitar master. this might be difficult to acheive, as i am apparently Caucasian.

Todd, Keith Richard's discovery (from Ry Cooder) of the Open G gave birth to the Stones' 4 album juggernaut from 68-72.

If you ever want to get the party started juke joint style the open G is where it's at.

Brown Sugar and Honky Tonk Women are both in Open G.

nuff said.

Todd, you need to listen to Peter Mulvey, and then try and figure out some of his stuff.

Oh yeah, Mulvey is at Schuba's on 4/15, so you've got plenty of notice.

Here are his tunings. He just has one guitar and tunes on the fly, with the help of a boss tuner pedal.

You should also check out a local guy named Eric Lugosch. He's in Evanston and has won the Winfield competition once and placed 3 times, making him one of the best on the planet. Oh, and Tommy Emmanuel is playing Martyr's on 2/16. He was a Chet Atkins discovery.

Hey Phil. Speaking of the Big Lugosch... while you've been away, Eric and I have been working on some more duet material.

Here's a sample of my part of "Marching Through Georgia". I haven't learned the whole song yet, as there are a lot of variations [and one really cool chromatic part]. That's Riley snoring at the end. He thinks the Civil War music is really boring.

You should hear Lugosch's part. It's really incredible... but no big surprise there, huh?

The tuning is open-D
[D A D F# A D]

See ya next week.

I have a friend who switches to open tunings (and back) on the fly simply by changing a preset on his VG8. He says it's a little weird playing one thing -- and having the vibrations against your fingers tell you that one thing -- and hearing another come out of the speakers, but he got used to it, and now can do it quite wizardly.

Sharon has a guitar that she never uses and said I could use it.
So I tuned it to open "G" and am gonna fuck around with that a bit, as well as experiment with a few other tunings.

Maybe have every string tuned to F# or some fucked-up Sonic Youth shit like that.

Travis Meeks uses some weird open tunings on his second album that are fun to mess around with.

Open F#m : C# F# C# F# A C#

Open C#7 : C# G# B C# E# B

Open G#7 : C# G# D# F# G# D#

Days of the New usually has a rep for being a weak post-grunge band, but their second album is really something.
