Well, my days in the music business are through. . .

In November, my Dad offered me a job working with him (being in house counsel and doing sales in the NE US). He said "Son, I know music is your passion and your dream, and I don't want to ask you to do something you don't want to do, but, this position is available, and you'll make a lot of money. It might be something for you to think about now that you are getting married and probably starting a family."

My dad has always sort of remained silent on the issue of career choice, instead just encouraging me to do what I thought was best for me and follow my dreams.

I spent about a month or so working it out in my mind, and then I spent some time over the holidays with him (at his big house on the golf course) and decided that I liked his house a lot better than my house (a small house in a fair neighborhood) and that it probably was better for my "new" family to take my future back into my own hands and out of the hands of the fickle music buying public.

So, I visited with my band (Endochine), visited with my events partner and made a graceful exit from "the biz". About a month into it, I have to say I feel really good about the decision - a lot better than I thought I would feel about walking away from what has been an incredibly fun and rewarding (yet very challenging) four years. . .

I'm looking forward to working with my Dad (as he approaches retirement age) and a few other family members and putting some coin back in my pocket at a really cool company. As my Dad has always said: "Money can't buy you happiness, but, it sure can buy you a nice big comfortable Cadillac to ride around in while you are looking for it. . ."

This serious Hobbyist of a musician completely understands.
Sounds like a good, (gulp) grownup move.
Good luck, Trevor.

<--- recognizing the fact that it is hard to make money at music, Polly decides to supplement her income by taking up work in the seriously profitable documentary film industry. ha.

(unless you're Michael Moore pt II., there's very little to be made in doc film...um... but it rocks.)

thought someone actually got rich and retired. Should have known that was unlikely with this lot.

2 years working down,

42 more to go.

Congratulations on the new career, Trevor... nothing wrong with providing for your family and buying an enormous house with carpet made of chinchilla and a secret passage to the poolhouse.

Best of luck, Trevor.

Does this mean, you'll be visiting the Northeast more often or does your position not offer such perks? :)

From what I hear being financially secure can be extremely liberating.

Not that I would know.

First thanks to all of you.

Second, I will definitely be visiting the NE, but, not Chicago - that isn't my territory. I may even be moving to Boston or NYC over the next year or so (temporarily) to get things in good order before returning to Texas --- and growing even older. . .(:)) (sorry - tis early for me - I read "OPA" as "EPA").

Yes, yes, yes Chris - NYC for sure.

Trevor

Sellout.

j/k
Is your dad hiring someone else?

You could afford a house by selling Endochine's cds? Wow.

ha - no, endochine never afforded me a house. i always had my law degree and would put it to use when things got "thin", but, i hate lawyers because i think that most of the time, they are nothing more than a delay.

and unfortunately, dad has filled all of his sales positions.

Umm, like, yeah!

babe, where in the industry were you working? Why don't people buy records (other than Bright Eyes') anymore?

I was management / record label and I was a partner in an events company (www.prolinkplanet.com). My partner in the events company wanted to focus more on our tennis events, so, it was a nice time for everyone for me to move on.

As for why people don't buy records, I think a lot of people still do, but, there is more music out there than ever -- which means a lot more of it "doesn't fit our taste" (i.e. - it sucks). Downloading/trading will continue to exist and will ultimately help bands, but as for when and how, je ne c'est pas mon ami.

C'est 'je ne sais pas' - from the verb 'savoir', to know - mais bon attempt. Well, I guess I commend your decision to move on. Even upon entering this business, I've had a strong notion that at some point I'll do the same. I'm still young and new, but I think the move might be best made preemptively, before I have a family to feed.

Best of luck, though you sound lucky as is.

Trevor, best of luck. Sometimes I ponder giving up music so i can get a real job that makes real money so i can convince my fiance that i'm not a bum so she'll marry me.

Unfortunately, i have no marketable skills other than being a musician and teaching music, neither of which pay real money.

Thanks for the beers, and introducing me to endochine.

Good luck with everything man, and let me crash in the basement of your new big house when i come through on tour.

-Phil

Congrats, babe! It's about time we had a self-made obneraire!!! We need to get together for some brews (perhaps those made by Chuck D himself) before you leave Austin. When do you think you'll be departing for the NE?

Oh no - I'll be in A-TX for at least another year. I have a store my fiancee' and I are opening in a couple of months and I need to see that through before we start talking about moving. But, yes suh - a couple of cold ones are long overdue. . .

I'm "always" in A-TX and in Dallas/Ft. Worth at least one night a week (usually Tue. night). Let's figure this out!!! I still have your number saved on my mobile!

The true definition of a sellout.

Not that there's anything wrong with that -- people gotta live.

Good luck with your new career.

that's not very nice.

it sounds like you've had a good time doing what you've been doing and have found the need for a change. life is all about evolving--it's process my friend. good luck on your new venture.

but hear me now and believe me later:
as soon as someone offers to pay me $100,000 to spend my waking hours drawing and painting the figure i'm leaving design/advertising.
