I know it's Football season and the NBA is about to begin but there's nothing more exciting than baseball's hot stove. Let's try to keep a log of what every team is doing with each person covering their favorite team.

As far as my favorite team, the Phillies, their managerial search will probably lead them to Jim Leyland. Other candidates I see them hiring are Charlie Manuel, Grady Little, or even Terry Pendleton.

My choice is Jim leyland, easily. Another managerial move which I found insteresting is Wally Backman becoming the new Diamondbacks manager. Good choice.

Does anyone know when the free agency period begins? Any rumors they've heard. The biggest rumor I've heard so far is that there are three teams who will go all out to sign Carlos Beltran (Yankees, Cubs, & Phillies). Should be awesome.

I can't take many more seasons of White Sox inadequacy.

I am seriously counting the days until Reinsdorf keels over. He has done more to hurt baseball in this town than anyone else in the last 75 years.

sosa has done everything possible to get himself out of town. now if the cubs can swing a deal w/ a team like the Mets to take him. I'm really interested in the Beltran sweepstakes as well as what the Cubs will do about Nomar. I read somewhere that he'd be willing to take a smaller one-year contract just to prove to the league he can play all year, thus getting him a long-term contract w/ someone. Cubs need a closer too, bad.

Do you really want Nomar back? If I were the Cubs, I'd go after Orlando Cabrera. And the Cubs are in desperate need of OF help with the potential Sosa trade and now Alou gone...

depends on how much $$ he wants, really. but to have a completely healthy Nomar would pay off. But yeah, it's a big gamble. I've also heard that the Cubs might try for Rentaria, but I'm sure the Cards will resign him.

I'd expect the Astros & Angels to also be in contention for Beltran. Angels are reportedly trading Guillen and moving Anderson to left. They plan to keep Erstad at 1st so they will need a new CF. They've indicated that they won't keep Glaus or Percival so they should have the $ to spend. They may also make a run at Pedro Martinez.

I'd actually be a bit surprised if Beltran ends up in NY. As a Yankee fan, pleasantly so, but I just don't see them getting him. I'm not sure he's not just using their interest to drive up his price, and they have a bit of a logjam at CF/DH right now anyway.

Oakland is reportedly going to trade one of their big three, with Hudson being the most likely since his contract is up after this year.

Very few quality Free Agent starting pitchers. The Yankees clearly need to upgrade their rotation, will be interesting to see how they accomplish that without a lot of highly regarded prospects to trade.

I'd love to see the Phillies try to get one of the Oakland pitchers. I'd prefer Mulder to the other two. If we can sign Beltran and add one quality arm to the rotation we'll be fine. The bullpen is fine right now.

I'm sure the Reds will have a team stocked full of hot minor league prospects who aren't ready for the big time, and play like crap depositing the team in the cellar or 5th place.

(For reference, see last season.)

from the NY POST 11/1/04.

Like how about Todd Helton as a Yankee? Say the Yanks do not land Carlos Beltran and still itch to add a player who impacts both sides of the ball? Helton has seven years at $119.3 million left. The Yanks are one of the few organizations that could absorb that (is Boston another if it can deal Manny Ramirez?). And Colorado actually likes several Yankee prospects, particularly Eric Duncan, but hates any salary wash involving Jason Giambi. So if they snared Helton, the Yanks would have to live with Giambi at DH and Bernie Williams in center for another year.

Colorado wants out of the Helton commitment and has a first base prospect (Ryan Shealy) due in 2006. But the Rockies know to retain any fan goodwill, Helton must be the one who publicly asks out citing the financial good of the franchise and to keep him from wasting a Cooperstown-touched career with a horrible club. Farfetched? Helton said recently he was concerned about "playing for a team that has no chance."

And just as a side note, if the Mets still had Scott Kazmir, they would have a front-running chip for Helton. But, heck, they have Victor Zambrano, right?

*

Like how about former infielder Gary Sheffield at first? If Beltran comes to The Bronx, the Yanks could then keep all of their best bats in the lineup by moving Williams to left, Hideki Matsui to right and leaving Giambi as DH.

*

Like how about Pedro Martinez in Flushing? An AL executive who speaks with Mets GM Omar Minaya said, "I bet they'll try. But if you were Pedro, why would you go to a bad club like the Mets?" Good point. But an NL GM said Martinez is going to have difficulty finding a three-year market at more than $30 million. If the Mets really are in go-for-it mode (which I personally think they should avoid), then would you rather spend $21 million over three years on Kris Benson or be the high bidder for Pedro?

Martinez's World Series performance in St. Louis showed just how dominant he would be against weaker, pitcher-included NL lineups. In five starts in NL parks over the last three years, opponents hit .183 off him. Still, if Martinez goes to the NL, the Giants, Dodgers and Marlins have the best shots and, the AL executive said, "Do you think Steinbrenner would let the Mets outbid them? No way."

*

Like how about Randy Johnson with the White Sox? The Yanks want him, but they might only be able to land him in a three-way trade. The Cardinals are the new darlings in the field. But the White Sox, with a package built around Carlos Lee and Jon Garland, could be most attractive.

*

Like how about Shawn Green as a Met? The Dodgers want out of his contract and an NL GM said Green has grown disenchanted in L.A. The AL executive who confers with Minaya said the Met GM is determined to "make a splash," which is why you are hearing Manny Ramirez and Sammy Sosa. If those fall through, watch for Green.

*

Like how about Jon Lieber in Cleveland, Texas or Toronto? The Yanks foolishly might not pick up Lieber's option, feeling $8 million is too expensive. But Lieber has value, even as trade bait. Could this be a sign — as some outside executives are whispering — that Steinbrenner's reaction to losing to Boston is to slash, not expand, payroll?

*

Like how about Ray Durham as a Yankee? The Giants want out of his $7 million in 2006, perhaps enough to do a one-year salary wash in 2005 in which they take Steve Karsay and Felix Heredia. San Fran could move Edgardo Alfonzo to second and Pedro Feliz to third. Durham would give the Yanks speed at second base.

i don't think i'd go to one game next year if that happened. luckily, i don't think omar minaya would do that. i'm a little worried about my mets this off-season, but i do really like minaya and was upset when the team let him go. the first decision, obviously, will be on a new manager. i've heard rumblings of jim leyland, rudy jaramillo, and jim fregosi. i don't know much of jaramillo, other than he's been the rangers' hitting coach.

If it was any other year, I'd agree w/ you RE: Sosa to Mets. But Jim Hendry has pulled some crazy shit out of his ass I never would have suspected so I can't put anything past him.
