My friend brought over his special edition copies of Bjork's Homogenic and Vespertine this weekend and we listened to them on my 5.1 surround system. I was absolutely blown away. Does anyone have any other surround sound albums that they can recommend me? I've searched the internets a little and I'm not coming up with much.

Are these DVD-A's, Grape?

I haven't heard any, but a good friend of Lemur's is a big fan (and was pushing for a release of Muse's Absolution).

I'm not sure what a DVD-A is, but yeah to be in 5.1, I think they have to be in DVD format. Both of the albums I listened to were played on my DVD player. And Absolution would be perfect for a surround mix. I want to find something LOUD. A Tool album would fit the bill too.

I would think that The Soft Bulletin would sound good.

The soft bulletin 5.1 mix is stellar.

Super Furry Animals-Rings around the world is supposedly the first record that was done in 5.1 from the beginning...that one sounds great.

I've heard that Super Furry Animals' 5.1 mixes are pretty impressive.

I don't have a surround sound deal, so maybe I'm missing out. But, while I love that Motorhead Ace of Spades album, I have a hard time believing a higher fi option is necessary or even recommended.

What happened to Quad, anyway?

well, i'm a surround sound addict. i think everything sounds better in surround sound. yeah, bands like motorhead don't benefit *as much* as something like yes's fragile (fragile sounds fucquin incredible, by the way), but they still benefit. obviously, the more layers and depth, the better the sound. as a general rule, the older the album is, the better it sounds, with a few exceptions... porcupine tree, for example. in absentia in surround is enough to floor ya. sigh. fantastic.

you can get a surround sound setup pretty damn cheap these days, too.

So... how obvious is the difference between a proper 5.1 source vs. a CD-quality source up-mixed through something like Pro-Logic II? Is the track mixing generally the same (vocals in center, for example)? I would guess that deliberate mapping to front L/R and back L/R would be noticeable.

its a great dvd...lots of fun animations and videos.

beware of the phantom power DVD...it was a rush job only made so that the band could mix the album in 5.1...poorly designed and executed (the songs sound great, this problems are technical)

The Liars' Drums Not Dead DVD is in 5.1. I have the DVD, but not surround, so I have yet to hear it in its full glory :? .

Yeah, I assumed this existed but never got confirmation until today. I plan on getting that and Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots next.

I can't remember what I read about the Flaming Lips 5.1s. It was either extreme--really good, or really bad. Can't remember now.

Blue Man Group -- both Audio and The Complex sound great in surround.

The rest of Bjork's catalog was released on dualdisk, I think, in surround. I think it's only available in a box set. There's also Beck.

A couple of Ministry's last albums were released on DVD-A. Animositisomina and...I don't remember what else.

On the DVD thing -- there's also SACD multichannel, but then you'll need a universal player like one of the Oppos or something. Blue Oyster Cult.

There's also something called DTS CD's, but they're rare.

On prologic -- yeah, if you like surround sound, definitely make sure your receiver can do it, because then it can be heard as an improvement on your CD's. Even my cheap little Yamaha can do it.

I have the Lips' Yoshimi 5.1 but I don't have a surround sound setup. It sounds good on my regular stereo, though.
