Forgive me if this has already been discussed, my search came out with nothing. Just wanted to say that I'm done with this. HBO's promotions did a nice job making this look interesting but I'm not feeling it at all. I've never seen anyone chew the scenery like Giamatti does in this one. He's constantly on the verge of either an explosion or tears. Oh, the acting of it all. Even the usually wonderful Laura Linney is a bit much, taking the severe, stricken route to certain Emmy glory. The episode centered on Adams as ambassador to France sealed the deal for me. I'm done.

I finally saw the first episode last night. I wasn't blown away by it. I'll probably watch at least one more episode but if it doesn't really grab me soon I doubt I'll make it to the end.

Casting Giamatti was a very poor decision. Apparently the demand for short portly actors has outstripped the supply. Danny Devito and Phillip Seymour Hoffman were probably busy.

Otherwise, I like it okay. Not great but stlll better than 60% of tv.

I have actually enjoyed this so far, but maybe that's because I wasn't expecting it to be something Really Great.

I mean, what did you really expect from a miniseries called John Adams? Not John Adams?

Worse than the Adams Casting was George Washington. Dude looks like he has to take a shit.

I haven't read the book, and my first impressions of this were that Giamatti was out of his league, but I have recently read a review that was pretty interesting.

Instead of history as hagiography, it is history as a living document, concerning actual people.

And, apparently, Adams WAS a schlub, Washington WAS a tight ass, and Jefferson WAS haughty.

And Bloor -- I think people were/are right to expect great things out of a Hanks-produced and David McCollough/Pulitzer Prize winning biography.

That said, I'm still sort of meh on it.

Oh sure they are (and with good reason I guess)--I was only speaking about myself.

I saw a thing on Lehrer with Giamatti and McCollough right before this thing started and I think it sorta balanced out my expectations a bit.

Giamatti is a cartoonish character actor at best.
