Was a line out the door when it opened up. Still found a nice stack of stuff for about 40 bucks all together

The Best of The Hep Tones (original studio 1 pressing)
Yusef Lateef: The Gentle Gian
Bashin' The Unprectible Jimmy Smith
Al Green: Still in Love With You
Teenage Head: Some Kinda Fun
Al Green: Green Is Blues (German pressing I've never seen before)
Fishbone (first ep)
Malcolm McLaren: Swamp Thing
Jimmy Rodgers: The Number One Ballads
Louis Prima: The Wildest
Fleetwood Mac: Rumors
The Four Tops: Main Street People
This Is Augustus Pablo
The Return of the Marvelettes (with a great cover shot of them in western wear on horseback)

There are worse ways to kill a day.

Where are these typically advertised? It would seem odd that they don't happen 'round these parts, but I've never been to one. I haven't really looked all that hard either, though.

A friend told me about this one years back...been going on for quite some time, just getting considerably more crowded these days. More higher priced stuff too, but still good deals around.

There are online places that list national ones. Here's one such like you could give a tray...

Thanks, bruh.

I think I may hit up Lancaster in the near future. Who else could say they went to a record show in Amish Country.

Lancaster is apparently crazy, Fu. I went to a few shows out here in Fredneck, and the guys who frequent the shows told me Lancaster is the place to go. Who knows whether its true or not, but I'd definitely check it out.

I go to that one on a semi-regular basis. After all... it is my hometown. I haven't been for a couple of months due to a complete absence of $$$... but when I do have cash it gets put to good use.

i've been going to the same one every thanksgiving for years, and the crowd keeps getting thinner and thinner.

I'd be game. I haven't been to the new location yet and have been meaning to make it out. I believe it is this coming Sunday!

Golly. I should note that in my Google Calendar.

What kind of stuff shows up at these? Mostly beat-up vintage 50s/60s/70s stuff, or newer non-mainstream stuff as well? There's one here in April, but I've never even considered going before. I may show up this time.

The ones I've been to focus more on collector-type vinyl than modern. If you wanna talk Jimmy Cliff with a middle aged Midwesterner, it's a good place to be.

I'm sure it depends where you go, but this one is a pretty wide range, although it is geared toward older stuff for sure, by nature of most stuff being used. I did pick up some Mogwai and a couple other more recent things one time. It just depends who rents tables at a given time. This one there are usually at least a couple tables where they are selling "new" stuff, but that's usually fancy reissues of older stuff and maybe a few newer titles tossed in. I don't really even look there since if I wanna pay retail price for a new record I got record stores I can go to any time and don't need to wait for these guys.

The used tables run the range from guys with a small stock of highly collectible stuff in mint condition priced accordingly to guys trying to unload a dozen boxes of crappy 12" singles that some DJs trashed, to an old lady with half a dozen boxes of records for a buck or two each. There's also always someone selling t-shirts and a guy who sells live DVD bootlegs. If you like 80s music, that stuff is almost always cheap, outside the punk records which rarely show up.

You gotta be ready to dig, but if you like any older styles of music, you can get some decent deals as long as you don't hit the collectors tables or the new reissues. Not that those guys rip you off, but you'll pay full value for stuff that way. Hit the tables with shit priced at a couple bucks per disc and you usually do OK, and often can grab stuff that other folks are charging lots more for. And yeah, lots of freak watching can be enjoyed and losers abound. Don't expect a bastion of coolness.

I ended up going to the show that I was talking about up-thread this morning.

For 25 dollars, I got:

ImageImage

A rare import double LP Beefheart's Lick My Decals and The Spotlight Kid that I'm really psyched about. The artwork is really cool - full Decals cover on one side, Spotlight on the Other. Gatefold.

Image

Triple gatefold LP of Nitty Gritty Dirt Band's Will The Circle Be Unbroken - $3

Image

Steve Earle - Guitar Town - $4

Image

Mojo Nixon - Bo-Day-Shus!!! - $3

Lots of other stuff I wanted but couldn't afford. I felt like a complete nerd being there, but it was pretty cool overall.

i went to a restructured chicago show yesterday and am still listening to the new buys today. i got ripped off on two james & bobby purify singles and a james carr single that i misidentified. otherwise, pretty good day. extra bonus: go-go dancing.

I'm kinda torn about collecting vinyl these days. I have a few hundred albums and a fairly decent record player but I just don't have the space since I've accumulated nearly 5,000 compact discs instead.

If anything, I want to find hilarious album covers and frame them on my walls.

The thrift stores here are literally overflowing with records but I rarely give them the attention they deserve.

BTW, this is what I found for a dollar each yesterday on cd:

RJD2- Deadringer
My Morning Jacket - Okonokos (double disc, live)
John Phillips - The Wolf King of L.A. (1970, ex-Momma and Papas singer)
Dashboard Confessional - The Shade of Poison Trees
Bright Eyes - Cassadega
Al Green - Gets Next To You
Herbie Hancock - Inventions and Dimensions (1964)
Pink Floyd - Echoes best of 2-cd set with extensive liner notes
Neko Case - Live from Austin Texas
