Big Star - Live at WLIR

This is the album where you can really hear what a freaking monster Jody Stephens is. Damn. And a short interview with Alex is pretty telling.

The singing on that Big Star album is pretty bad in some places.

Agreed. And that's why I don't listen to it much.
But the drumming is phenominal. And the interview is pretty interesting. Overall, as I said, I don't listen much, but I am glad to have it in my collection.

Oh, and NP:
Poor People - Sweatbox (early mixes)

Restless Variations

Damn 80s thread has me digging out a bunch of stuff I haven't played in a while. This is one of those label specific compilations that used to be big. From 1985. It's got great tracks from Lazy Cowgirls, Straw Dogs, John Trubee, Mojo Nixon, Dead Milkmen, FEAR and more. Mostly straight ahead rock tracks with a few more esoteric cuts thrown in for good measure.

Do the vocals still suck? I could imagine myself liking them without the singer.

That is the main reason I never could get into these guys....The vocal always ruined it for me, no matter how good the songs were...
But, this time around, there is a better balance...Not as much of the ultra high pitch stuff.......I like it enough to the point where I may want to re-visit the older records.

Eh, I just listened to "The Running Free" and I don't know what I was thinking. The music AND singing were horrible. I remember hearing a song off another album (maybe the one before it?) that I thought the music was decent on though, without the vocals.

I agree it's a tremendous record, and the vocals are a welcome relief from the gutteral growl of most metal these days. So they're a plus to me.
