Ricky Deez current list of randomness on the Ipod. Feel free to waste your time. Oh, thread stolen from the desk of DHRjericho.
"Leopardman at C & A" - The Dirtbombs
This is from their new one. I've only listened to it a couple of times but this song definitely stands out. Bizarre lyrics with some fuzzed out bass and primal beat. This has got a Nick Cave vibe to it. Maybe it's just the voice.
"You Can't Break A Heart and Have It" - Frank Black
One of my faves off Bluefinger. Dude just continues to do what he do. The female backing vocals actually make this more Pixie-ish than some of his solo work. I mean, she even sounds like Kim at times. I love it when Frank has screaming freak outs in songs.
"Midwest Town" - The National Lights
This was from the underappreciated The Dead Will Walk, Dear from last year. Some will say they're a poor man's Iron and Wine but I liked this album better than I&W's last one. Some dark shit on some of their songs but this one is just achingly pretty and sad. Pretty and sad, always a winning combo.
"Why Don't You Love Me (Like You Used to Do)" - Elvis Costello
This is an old Hank Williams, Sr song from his "country" album Almost Blue. I think the standard opinion of this album was that E.Cost had great taste but it just didn't really suit him. Problem with trying to do the caliber songs he does on that album is that you'll never top the original. This is a revved up version and comes off a bit silly. Still, I don't think it deserves the amount of hate it draws compared to his other work.
"J.P.M.F.Y.F" - Tim Easton
Great mellow tune from his Ammunition album. It stands for Jesus Protect Me From Your Followers. Pretty much about the hypocrisy of those who use religon and Jesus as a means to an end. Pretty appropriate considering today's regime and political climate. It could come off as heavy handed if he didn't sound so damn weary on it. That weariness only adds to it.
"Too Drunk To Dream" - Whiskeytown
"Ain't no drinking when the bottle is dry" indeed. To me this was an early Ryan Adam's classic. The best song Gram Parsons never wrote.
"Slime & Oxygen" - The Black Lips
This album made my top 20 last year. This is just some good garage rock that sounds like it was recorded in 1966 and ended up on a Nuggets compilation. Just 3 chords over and over with a couple of guitar freak outs and a drummer bashing away. I've really come around on this band in the last year.
"Come Downstairs & Say Hello" - Guster
Little pop/rock gem at the end of my favorite album of theirs, Keep It Together. Not the best song on the album but it has what most Guster songs have.....melody, melody, melody.
"Her Love Made Me" - The Sadies
From their In Concert Vol. 1 album which has, along with Okonokos, become one of my favorite live recordings of the last few years. I think it's actually a Heavy Trash song because it's one of the 2-3 songs that Jon Spencer sings lead on. In fact, I think I read that the Sadies backed Heavy Trash on their 1st tour. Regardless, great song on a great album.
"Coat of Many Colors" - Dolly Parton
Pretty much one of her best songs. Heartwarming and sad at the same time. I always take from it that being rich is just a state of mind if you got loved ones. If you don't know......you better axe somebody.
