This 1981 flick is being released for the first time. Rhino is putting out the DVD. The news is from CMJ (of all places!): Linky

Fun movie. I watched it for thefirst and only time about ten years back at a friends house. Wasn't this also Laura Dern's first flick?

Wow...this has been one of the "DVD Holy Grail" movies for years. Couldn't tell you how many times I saw it on "Night Flight" in the 80's. Haven't seen it since then.

I think I still have a VHS copy of this lying around somewhere. I love the Fee Waybil character.

Now, they just need to get rollin' on getting the first Decline of Western Civilization out on DVD and Urgh! A Music War.

I burned my own - IFC shows it on a pretty regular basis.

Big ups to Night Flight for introducing me to the Fabulous Stains as well. I still jones for that show from time to time. I know it is all up on Youtube, but it just isn't the same as being there back in the day. We seriously need adventurous programming like that back on the airwaves somewhere.

I watched this for the first time tonight. Fun flick.

Soundtrack isn't available, anyone have it or know of anywhere I can get it?

I've never seen the soundtrack. But, you can get records by The Professionals, a band with Steve and Paul but without Simo and the actor. They have an album where they do the song Be A Professional featured in the movie. They're OK, but nothing horribly special. Fun to play now and again.

but ironically Ms. Lane is topless or in a see-through shirt like 65% of the time.

Nobody--yeah, I wouldn't play the soundtrack or those songs that much but right now I'm in the mood. Basically it is replacing the "Thermos" song from The Jerk.

Jesus, I never really thought about that, but she was what, 16, maybe 17 at the time?

I dunno, I feel like that movie reflects more of a particular era than most others. It's got a strong female character and well-written dialogue...
I mean, when you line it up with say, Rock and Roll High School or Rude Boy*, I think this movie looks a lot better than it would on its own. I don't know, it just feels more viable. Also, it has that weird connection with Slap Shot and Up In Smoke.

*though the footage of that anti-skinhead rally and Strummer's scene in the bar alone makes Rude Boy a classic in my eyes.

Up In Smoke was done by the same director. I was thinking the same thing about the Slapshot connection but I factor that into that it was the sameish era, meant to be placed in a slummy part of PA, and also probably used similar film stock, hence the same color palette.

I also agree that it sums up a particular era. It was a few years past punk when kids in suburbia weren't really sure what the definition of punk was.

I just signed up for the netflix trial thru my new Wii. I'm surprised (yet not really) about the new releases and blockbusters that aren't available to stream. They are trying to get me for that additional $2 per month to get DVD's in the mail.

Not really. Netflix believes the future is online streaming and sees it's mail business as not a long-term strategy. The lack of available new releases is the result of contracts with the movie industry to make so much of Netflix's content available instantly.

I just tried checking this out on streaming Netflix, but only made it through the first 45 minutes or so, as it is damn near unwatchable. Fee Waybill is especially awful in this.

Me, too - and I went in really wanting to like it. I mean, it's got teenage Diane Lane, teenage Laura Dern, and is directed by the guy who gave us Up in Smoke...seemed like it couldn't miss.
