Okay, this looks funny.
Anyone else going to see it?

I haven't seen a "grown up" movie in the theaters since Blair Witch Project (yeah, for real), but this may have to be my first. Yes, I like to laugh.

Apparently people are up in arms by the use of the word "retard" in it and are actively protesting/boycotting the release.

Not a word that I use or condone, but...

Get over it, people.

The irony is that they are really just lampooning the way that it seems like every time a major athlete plays someone with Mental Disabilities they seem to win an Oscar.....so really they aren't making fun of "retards" they are making fun of actors.

I think I might be going to see it tonight. I love how AMC theaters have $5 shows during the week.

CNN reported that the main character is mentally handicapped and his character is made fun of throughout the film.

Way to get your facts straght, CNN.

Yeah, but the American public is retarded and doesn't get this meta-irony.
Mr. Show did a skit about this phenomenon at least once.

Stiller, Justin Theroux and Etan Cohen co-wrote? Not sure about Theroux's writing ability, but he was awesome as "Bradley" in The Baxter. Cohen co-wrote with Mike Judge, the awesome on paper, terrible on film Idiocracy. Looks like Cohen also wrote/directed the short, My Wife is Retarded.

I wish someone had told me that the statute of limitations on rewriting "Galaxy Quest" had expired... or was that "Three Amigos"?

I pretty much hate Ben Stiller in anything. He was good in Permanent Midnight and I liked him on the old Ben Stiller Show, but his roles are usually a combination of asshole (see Curb Your Enthusiasm, where he played "himself") or annoyingly neurotic bungler (Zoolander, Fockers, Duplex).

Duplex will go down as one of my least favorite movies EVAR. Ben Stiller + Danny Devito directed movie = gratingly annoying (see the same results in combination with Billy Crystal). After watching it in the theater, I distinctly remember saying to my friend "I feel like my insides have been scraped at with a fork". Yes, I hated it that much. Pretty much the same physiological reaction I have to Def Leppard and some Latin dance music.

Ben Stiller has turned into Will Ferrell for me. They do the same character in every movie with just a slightly different backstory. There isnt much need for character development with them. A few exceptions, like Meet the Parents, do not make up for the monotony of these two "comedians".

I am going to go see the 5 dollar showing of this only because I like Robert Downey, Jr. enough to sit through Stiller and Jack Black.

Galaxy Quest?

Alan Rickman and Robert Downey should do a movie together.

it was funny. downey jr. was the best in the movie, tho stiller and black had a few good lines.

tom cruise is in it too and some of the lines are kind of funny but the role is so embarrassing in a "hey i can be funny too...hollywood take me back!" way.

Well, to duplex's credit (I guess) it was one of those movies that they knew was bad, so they shelved it for a year and dumped it in that late august slot after everyone has gone back to school.

same with Stiller's Envy with Jack Black.

Yeah Downey was the ONLY thing remotely funny about this...and the only reason I went to see it.

If you HAVE to see it, rent it.

I HAD to see it because my chick felt like seeing a movie...

Not irredeemably terrible but far, far from good. Tom Cruise was pretty entertaining. They should have ramped up the black/white jokes to the level of the retard jokes. I smelled scared white boys as writers.

Also, this was the first Ben Stiller flick I've seen since Zoolander.

I agree with this post. Downey was pretty convincing, especially the way he never broke character. Jack Black was a complete waste of space. I don't think he caused me to laugh once. Renting it was the way to go.

i agree. I actually found the movie to be very disappointing and way overrated. The only times i laughed were with the fake movie previews at the beginning, and Downeys role - and yes he did do a good job.
