I'm going to apologize in advance because I know this has been covered many times but I did a search (I swear!) and couldn't find the right thread. I need to reverse engineer the old iPod so I can transfer its contents onto a new PC. Anyone help?

Okay, I downloaded Ephpod and it allowed me to import my playlist from the iPod into iTunes while the iPod is connected. But I want to actually upload the music from the iPod to the PC's hard drive. Is that possible?

Thanks for taking the time to reply, Haq. All of my music is on my new PC now. You are the man.

I don't understand why Apple makes things so difficult. With my IRiver, I just drag and drop.

I believe it was to keep the record cos. off their ass (by making it difficult to share one's entire collection en masse).

Alright, Haq, another consult is needed. I uploaded all the songs to my machine using Ephpod and then added the folder to iTunes. For some reason, this has disabled the "gapless playback" function so there is a 2 second pause between songs like there was with previous versions of iTunes. Any clues? Anyone?

Still trying to figure out why last.fm isn't scrobbling my ipod. When I connect my ipod to my computer, the last fm starts to try to scrobble it but fails and a small message comes up saying something to the effect of no ipod found. I noticed I could run a diagnostics in itunes and it comes up with a similar problem of no ipod found in the sync diagnostics check. I have no problem manually transferring new music to the ipod via itunes or deleting stuff on the ipod so I'm not sure exactly what it means by ipod not found. I dled the latest itunes software hoping that would fix things and updated the firmware on my ipod and re-ran the diagnostics. Same problem came back. I tried searching the ipod help but either i'm using the wrong terms to find an answer or its not there. I doubt I would have even noticed this issue if I hadn't tried to use last.fm so i'm not sure this is really that big a deal. last.fm isn't really that important but still it bugs me that this isn't working like its supposed to. Anyone have this problem before and figure it out?

should i be worried?

my wife wants an ipod for her birthday, and i am getting her one. she never asks for anything so i'm definitely getting one!

are all these wackadoo problems due to the fact that you are all music nerds and tech geeks? all she wants is an mp3 player that she can load songs onto and then listen to.

Does anyone know if it's possible to shuffle songs in a playlist?

No. Nothing to worry about. Get her an Ipod Nano and even less to worry about - no hard drive to worry about getting banged around. I've had 3 Ipods and my Iphone and my wife has had two and none of them have had any serious issues until her 3+ year old 4th gen 20gb Ipod started acting up - battery FINALLY started to die, hard drive being weird. This after living at the bottom of her purse which gets slammed down on floors, etc. My 40gb 4th gen is still running just fine at nearly 4 years old - it's currently in the hands of my parents. Treat them for what they are - little computers - and they will treat you very, very well for a long time.

If I were you, I'd wait a month or so and see what Apple is about to introduce. There's talk of a new Nano. At the very least, I'd expect to see more memory, but I'm betting the Nano is being reformatted entirely to better watch movies on it. There are also rumors that the Touch is getting a serious makeover and capacity upgrade.
