Had no idea this was coming out.

Neil Young's early days on CD

In his continuing trek through his vaults, Neil Young will release one of his earliest live solo recordings Nov. 25 entitled Sugar Mountain Live at Canterbury House 1968.

The 23-track album was recorded over the course of two nights (Nov. 9-10, 1968) at the Ann Arbor, Michigan venue from a 2-track tape recorder and kept in storage for over four decades. The material includes early recordings of songs Young would later release on solo albums. The title track, I've Been Waiting For You, The Old Laughing Lady, Mr. Soul, The Loner and Out of My Mind are some of the numbers featured.

Young embarks on his North American tour this week with his first Canadian stop planned for Winnipeg's MTS Centre on Thursday.

Wonderful news to me. What about the archives though.

I just picked up Zuma, American Stars and Bars, and Tonight's The Night LPs like an hour ago. A good day.

Previously only knew it well as a collection of mp3s. This was a great listen on wax, this morning.

Is it really that much better on vinyl? Sometimes I wonder if it's placebo.

wasnt he supposed to be releasing like a 9-disc archive thing last year?

anyway regardless, the first two vault releases are just about the best things ever so i will definitely welcome more.

YES definitely. Way more robust and defined than playing it off iPod speakers, and I'm happy to own a crisp copy of an album I love.

Just found this:

Quote:
Neil News: Live Set Due, 'Archives' Delayed

October 13, 2008 , 12:20 PM ET
Jonathan Cohen, N.Y.
There's good news and bad news for long-suffering Neil Young fans. The good: highlights from a sought-after Nov. 9-10, 1968, run from the Canterbury House in Ann Arbor, Mich., will be released as "Sugar Mountain: Live at Canterbury House 1968" Nov. 25 via Reprise.

The bad: Young's endlessly delayed "Archives Vol. 1 (1963-1972)" is officially pushed back to some point in 2009. Young has waffled about whether the project will only be available on Blu-ray and DVD or whether there will be CDs sold; the latest word from Reprise is that "Archives" will be DVD only.

"Sugar Mountain," which will not be included in "Archives Vol. 1," was taped a few days shy of Young's 23rd birthday. Young had split from Buffalo Springfield six months earlier, and was testing out his solo material in front of audiences more accustomed to seeing him perform with a band.

The album features future young staples such as "Mr. Soul," "Expecting To Fly," the title track and "Broken Arrow," along with several snippets of between-song banter where Young discusses the menial jobs he held in Toronto.

Also, just having listened to American Stars and Bars, the answer is a resounding YES. Now I get why Neil thinks "Will To Love" was the best record he made. There are layers to it I'd never heard before.

I've been planning on slowly building back my vinyl collection and comments like this make me want to speed up the process.

4 years ago, I stupidly gave away a original vinyl copy of American Stars and Bars, Harvest and Comes a Time.

Eesh.

I could grab you US Stars and Bars. There were two good copies where I got mine...

I got my eyes out for a well-kept Harvest, On The Beach, Comes A Time, and then I'll be happy. Too bad all the recent Neil titles are like $50-60 on LP.

Anyone have "Sleeps With Angels" mp3 handy? I lost it. See?

I will cling greedily to my Neil Young vinyl until the day I die. I really need to get Tonight's the Night and Harvest on vinyl, and I feel really lucky to have On the Beach and Time Fades Away on wax as well the others I picked up pretty cheap (Everybody Knows, Zuma, Stars and Bars).

Really excited about this live set. I wonder, since this is chronologically earlier than the previous two that were released, if this will be the mysteriously missing "Vol. 1" of his live vault releases.

Can you elaborate? I'm not in the know.

From what you guys know, is the bulk of the archives live or studio recordings?

i think he's speaking of the Neil Young Archive Performance Series, of which there is the Crazy Horse at The Fillmore 1970 released as "Disc 02" and Massey Hall 1971 released as "Disc 03".

Oh nevermind, this is supposedly Vol. 00 of the "Performance Series". (Live at Fillmore East was Vol. 02 & Massey Hall was Vol. 03.) According to Wikipedia, Vol. 01 is something called "The Riverboat" which was apparently previewed with a bonus track on some versions of Chrome Dreams II.

I bought after the gold rush on vinyl the other day and I can definately say this is supposed to be listened from the black circle. never heard such a huge difference between CD and vinyl.

I think a lot of Neil CD's released prior to the 2003 remasters weren't mastered all that well for CD. I've noticed pretty big differences on Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere and Zuma.

As great as On the Beach sounds on vinyl, I think the 2003 remaster sounds very, very close, if not just as good.
