No real surprises imo, but seeing how many times artists are scrobbled is fairly interesting.

i enjoyed that a lot until the top 10 new tracks of the year were split evenly between MGMT and coldplay. i think that's a fair assessment of new pop music in 08.

It tracks what you listen to.

Cool way to discover similar artists and folks that dig the same shit that you do.

I'm fine with them being so popular.

I'm really surprised at the lack of hip hop.

i don't mind either group being popular, though i also think that both of those records were at best good and not great.

also, a good friend and music lover states at any chance he gets that coldplay are the british dave matthews band. thoughts?

i think i disagree, barely. i like coldplay more than dave matthews, certainly, but even so it seems a pretty good comparison.

I finally found a way to real-time scrobble what I listen to on my iPhone: Simplify Media.

I definitely disagree. Coldplay might be the DMB of 10 years ago but not now. Coldplay's new stuff still gets radio play while Dave Matthews Band is really only popular with the fans its had for years. Also, while both groups have annoying fans, the DMB die hards are way worse than the Coldplay die hards.

Id imagine that Last.fm has an 'audience' that is not be as mainstream as the non-last.fm music listening public but I would still be interested to see how widespread last.fm is as a phenomenon. What I mean is, how 'indie' (for lack of a better word) is it? I dont know, I was just curious what the sample is here.

I think Last.FM is not so much indie as it is "music-nutty" and computer literate. From the look on that list of albums it seems to me that it might be heavily weighted by the UK.

Yeah I saw that, especially on the top artists. But from random scrolling, the artists may be heavily UK but I think users are perhaps more broadly Europe (I see a lot of EU users).

Interesting though.

bob, it DOES scrobble what you listen to on your ipod!! that is one of the coolest things about it! you might want to delete and reinstall your last.fm app.
