Been listening a bunch to The Lonesome Sea by Wayne Robbins and the Hellsayers. My favorite right now. Just got it a couple weeks ago but I'm pretty sure this would be high on my shmoopie poll if time was elastic and I could go back. Sad that it's getting such little distribution or press because it's really a nice album. Probably comes closer to that magic sound of After the Gold Rush than Neil could get today, but still never sounds dated. A little of that "Helpless" flavor in the chorus of the second song. Guess they did some shows opening for My Morning Jacket so that's a good comparison too. But closer to the Songs: Ohia take on Neil Young, maybe. Not the totally melancholy Molina as on Didn't It Rain that I love the most, but the more twangy and hopeful one that made Magnolia Electric Co so good. And they do let loose on occasion with the full arsenal of Crazy Horse guitars, which always makes me smile. Kind of like Doug Martsch and his Built To Spill take on Neil Young, but more lap steel. Good lyrics too. Very nice album. Only 10 songs and a couple do go on a little longer than they should, but the rest is golden, especially for a debut. First read about it a couple months ago at the americana-uk site where they gave it a 9 out of 10 rating, and ordered it from Wayne himself for $12 ppd after listening to some samples. Any other obnerats heard this one yet?

What part did I intrigue you with the most? I did just put together a new comp and included the first two songs from this album in about the middle - kind of a fun thing that wanders around through a few dive bars and down a couple back alleys but never really gets in any trouble. Even finishes off a little new-agey, which you would never expect after the Pixies shake the bone machine in the beginning. Hit me with a PM if you'd like to get a copy :)

Shake those monkey bones
