Am I the only one who finds this guy a completley unlikable lying piece of shit?

Stating that the amount of media attention that the steroid issue is getting is "comical" and that the media are just all "liars". He also says that the reason he's getting such criticism these days is because he's about to break Ruth's mark and because Ruth was white. HUH?! Does anyone else think this is true? His ass should kiss the ground that Jackie Robinson and Hank Aaron walked on. This guy will obviously never get it.

i think that before the steroid thing came to a head it was arguable that sportswriters in particular wrote negative things about him in part because he was an uncompromisingly arrogant, and coincidentally black, athlete, and it was easy in his mind to compare himself to jack johnson and the like. i'm not sure that he was entirely, 100% off base with that.

edit- i still don't like the guy and i still think that he's cheated and should be fired.

His press conference yesterday was really odd. He went from being angry and pissed off to joking with the reporters in the span of 5-10 minutes.

Chase, you and I agree for once. Barry is what Nick Tosches called Dean Martin: "Una Menefrighista." Translated to: One who simply does not give a fuck. Barry could be the most popular player of all time, he's fucking awesome, he has charisma, etc...but he doesn't care. He's content to be an asshole.

And I love him, size 9&7/16 head and all.

D, I agree with you that he is a stunning talent but, IMO, to say that steroids can't help your performance in baseball is LAUGHABLE.

Also, it has become such a joke that it has lost meaning, but, the whole "I didn't know what I was taking" excuse is probably the lamest statement in the history of pro sports.

...well....other than Spreewell's "I got ta feed my family" comment.

True Dat, Benny. Especially for a world class athlete. You knw DAMN WELL what you were taking, unless he can prove that his childhood friend, a dude he's known for 30 years was actually giving him steroids and telling him they were something else, then the burden of proof should remian on his head.

I've ingested a lot of substances in my time, and never once did I not know what it was...might've been drunk enough to say "Why not?" but I always had an idea of what I was getting into.

I'm already tired of seeing clips of this interview on ESPN and I've only watched about 20 minutes of Sports Center since yesterday. Bonds didn't say anything. It was, like all sports interviews, totally ambiguous and uninteresting. I love how the media is trying to make it look like it was an interesting press conference by saying things like "Bonds rips press" and "Bonds lashes out..." It was a boring press conference that told us nothing we didn't already know.

Exactly...I made it thru about 1.5 minutes of that garbage before I changed the channel. Barry just comes off as a complete douchebag.

I think if i was given the option of either.

A) Yanks win the World Series in 2005
or
B) Bonds suffers a career ending achilles heel tear at 713 home runs,

I'd go with (B) 9 out of 10 times.

Before the 73 HRs... NO ONE liked this jackass. It's just our nature to love a record-breaker. Now that he's back in the negative light, I am extremely happy.

Thanks. Devastatin' Dave has had a profound influence in my life so I thought this was the best way to pay homage to a true American hero.

I liked him less after the 73 home runs. I don't like seeing records broken. I didn't like when McGwire broke Marris's record but it's much worse that Bonds is going to break Aaron's.

I don't understand this statement. That's why records are kept: because they are meant to be broken.

What I'm saying is that the media and the fans hated him before he challenged the most sacred of baseball records. Then everyone jumped on the Bonds Bandwagon. The funny thing is, he's always been the same toolbox.

I realize that. For me personally, there's something about the "untouchable" record that has been held for decades. I prefer that to the same record being broken every 10 years or so like the NFL rushing record.

But, doesn't that make it more exciting, when the record is untouchable? It means that only once in a generation is someone good enough to beat the best from a previous generation. Imean, it doean't make the old record any more impressive, and you can always argue that Maris did it under more pressure, or w/o batting gloves and a cyborg-style elbow pad, but I still like the record chase. Especially in baseball.

Especially since if you ask anyone who has ever been associated with him they'll tell you that he is a fucking tight-ass about his workouts, his body, and what he puts in it. And he "Didn't know"? Ooooookaaaaayy.

Bobby Bonilla speaking to sportswriter Bob Klapisch circa 1992

Bonilla:Oh, look who's here, you fuck. Why don't you suck my dick? But, hey, don't take it personally.Go ahead, Bobby(Klapisch), make your move. I know you're feeling the itch. Make your move. Cause I'll hurt you.

Klapisch:Are you threatening me?

Bonilla:Whatever. It's like the home boys say back home, We just chillin.' Make your move.

Klapisch:You want to fight me?

I'm gonna make a T-shirt w/ Bonilla on it, and "Make Your Move" under it, with this whole motherfucker on the back. this rules.

Yeh, I hear this comment more and more these days, and not just from ball players. Idjits call in to radio shows to explain that baseball isn't all power and strength like football and consequently steroids don't offer much advantage. I mean, if steroids aren't an advantage, then why do these nimrods take 'em in the first place?

Yea, if they didn't help, then athletes wouldn't risk their health, freedom (jail), job, and family (death) to use them.

Yup. They take 'em because the wall is more than 400 feet away in centerfield. I'm all about Barry getting kicked out of the game, and expecially about having his records erased and being banned from Cooperstown's.

Can't agree more with you guys. There are a ton of elements necessary to hit a baseball successfully, but strength is definitely one of them. It's strength that allows a player to turn on a fastball that your ordinary scrub can't get around on. It's strength that allows a player to foul off a nasty pitch that scruberino pops up to first.
