I own what I refer to as a "kiddie shredder" -- in other words, it's like cooking with an Easy Bake Oven, it just doesn't do much. And I don't have time to sit here and shred one sheet at a time.

I'm looking for something reliable, can shred stuffed envelopes, pulverize credit cards, and can do more than 5 sheets at a time. Though, I don't want an industrial shredder or something too expensive and big that I can't easily store it. Ohh, and it should be relatively kid-safe.

Recommend away!

confirm this. ive had a few but my current one (a Fellowes) has been the longest lasting and most reliable.

Its this one:

VERY IMPORTANT!!!

Pick up some of this and squirt it into your shredder every now and again. It actually does make them last longer:

I have an Ativa that seems to be working well - I shred EVERYTHING and tend to put full envelopes, etc in the bugger and chews em all up.

Do Not skimp - I paid $150 for the last one, and only because I had a $50 off coupon from Office Despot - the good ones cost $$.

I thought Todd had won this thread until I got to Chad's post.

I hate getting those checks from my credit cards in the mail every day because I have to shred them instead of recycle them.

That's exactly what I've been using. But I have bags upon bags of my mom's old credit card bills, etc that are from years back. That shit needs to go. And while it would be great to just get a garbage bin and set that shit on fire, it's illegal in my city.

Fellowes, eh? I'm off to research!

I actually keep a few separate recycle bags, and when I get a credit card bill or check like TJ mentioned that needs to be discarded, I use my hands. And then, I separate the pieces randomly into the separate bags.
I also put out only one or two bags a week.

But I suppose that I do need a shredder now that I am a grownup (of sorts).

Dude, all I need to do is go out to Chino where the cows hang out. I'll just say that I'm trying to get rid of the smell of manure or something.

Tania - if you don't really need a shredder for every day life, you should be able to find a records destruction service - heck, your work probably uses one - that will d most of this for you. Shredding bags or boxes full of stuff will take too damn long.

Does your trash service pick up recyclables? Ours does.

You people are all paranoid. Do you really think there are criminals sifting through your garbage every week? If someone was going to steal your identity, they'd use a computer.

not meth addicts. they're the people who actually have the time to sift through garbage and, incidentally, piece together poorly-shredded documents.

Mutty - out where we operate, it pays to be paranoid.

I shred a TON of work related documents - polling, contributor lists, voter files, etc. Proprietary shit that I can't afford ANYONE to get their hands on.

Shredding office documents I totally understand. What I question is individuals afraid to throw anything away without shredding first... its an irrational fear. Do you stay out of the water at the beach because of shark attacks, also?
