Are you familiar with the King Missile song "Jesus Was Way Cool"?

Do you find it funny, or offensive?
Both?
I honestly want to know.

Why?
Because I don't think that it makes fun of Jesus in any way (although it does have fun with His story), nor does it say anything bad about him.

For you who are not familiar with the tune, it's a spoken-word piece, set to music (of course... it's King Missile). And, here are the lyrics:

Quote:
Jesus was way cool
Everybody liked Jesus
Everybody wanted to hang out with him
Anything he wanted to do, he did
He turned water into wine
And if he wanted to
He could have turned wheat into marijuana
Or sugar into cocaine
Or vitamin pills into amphetamines

He walked on the water
And swam on the land
He would tell these stories
And people would listen
He was really cool

If you were blind or lame
You just went to Jesus
And he would put his hands on you
And you would be healed
That's so cool

He could've played guitar better than Hendrix
He could've told the future
He could've baked the most delicious cake in the world
He could've scored more goals than Wayne Gretzky
He could've danced better than Barishnikov
Jesus could have been funnier than any comedian you can think of
Jesus was way cool

He told people to eat his body and drink his blood
That's so cool
Jesus was so cool
But then some people got jealous of how cool he was
So they killed him
But then he rose from the dead
He rose from the dead, danced around
Then went up to heaven
I mean, that's so cool
Jesus was way cool

No wonder there are so many Christians

I have friends who fall on both ends of the spectrum, and I want to know (if it offends you) why it does.

I hope that all will be aware that this post is not a conscious, nor unconscious personal swipe at anyone here, nor at your beliefs. And I will take down the lyrics at the request of anyone who is offended -- send PM.

Just looking for some thoughts on this one (which I like a lot).

That's what I want to know.
Like I said, I have friends who do find it so. And, they have asked me to refrain from playing it or singing it when they're around.

If they get offended by this song, they should not be your friends.

I think the lyrics are really dumb, but it's far from offensive to me.

People get so offended at any alternate usage of their symbols. I remember a kid who was at some arts festival in Virginia Beach. It's a really crappy festival and most of the art is like people who paint light houses and sea shells. Not real art; absent a message or intent other than to sell home decor. Well one year there was this 19 year old kid smack dab in the middle and he had painted these really awesome works. I am awful at description, but one of them had a body hanging on a cross and the head (with a crown of thorns) was just some like modern house like you'd see in a housing development. All the other people standing at the foot of the cross had the same type of head. Like cookie cutter homes as heads. They were really interesting paintings and my description does no justice. At any rate, some woman came in and asked why he was painting things like that. He explained his intent and what he felt it meant (a bit about how the US has turned Jesus into a fast food, factory type of image and removed all of his substance as an historical person, etc.). The woman, after hearing his description slapped him in the face and stormed off.

All that to say, I think the reason people get offended by stuff like this is because they mention Jesus and pot and Jesus and cocaine in the same work. It's like they have some weird obsession with not violating their perception of what Jesus symbolizes. It's the same reason why people got so up in arms about The Last Temptation of Christ, IMO.

Anyway, those were just my thoughts. Take it for what it's worth.

Yeah, I am not offended as a Christian, I am offended as someone who gets impatient with witlessness.

What about Spirit in the Sky? Anyone offended by that?

What about Jesus is Just All Right?

What about that song Ministry stole from the Surfers @ Jesus' Hot Rod?

As a Christian, David Bazan has written songs with lyrics that would be way more offensive to Christians than this. At least the type of Christian who would find this offensive.

Christ actually delivered some pretty harsh "lyrics" for today's Talibanelicals too.

Barzan has some gems, but this is still the "Jesus-pop-standard:"

And jesus was a sailor
When he walked upon the water
And he spent a long time watching
From his lonely wooden tower
And when he knew for certain
Only drowning men could see him
He said all men will be sailors then
Until the sea shall free them
But he himself was broken
Long before the sky would open
Forsaken, almost human
He sank beneath your wisdom like a stone

The one song I love, but kind of cringe at the lyrics, is "The Ruling Class" by Loose Fur. It's not that I'm personally offended or anything, just more sheepish at how I might explain listening to this if my retired pastor father-in-law ever happened to hear Tweedy singing about Jesus shootin' smack and smokin' crack.

"Um, yeah, so I can explain that. You see, he's saying that Jesus is really everyman, and if the second coming were to take place in today's society, um..."

You've got to be referring to "Rapture" from Control:

Quote:
This is how we multiply
Pity that it's not my wife
The friction and skin
The trembling sigh
This is how bodies move
With everything we could lose
Pushing us deeper still
The sheets and the sweat
The seed and the spill
The bitter pill yet undiscovered

Gideon is in the drawer
Clothes scattered on the floor
She's arching her back
She screams for more

Oh, my sweet rapture
I hear Jesus
Calling me home

Finally a chance to breathe
Reaching for the the fallen sheets
Collapsing in a glowing heap
We've gone too far
We've done too much
We have to quit it
Just one more kiss
Just one more touch
Please ten more minutes

This feels so good
Just barely moving
The tension building
Our bodies working
To reach the goal

Oh, my sweet rapture
I hear Jesus and the angels singing
Hallelujah
Calling me to enter the promised land

Love this song - so much double meaning :)

It's like they hold it "sacred" or something.

Beyond that, seriously? King Missile?

the weirdness is further compounded by the fact that the lady felt she should uphold her belief in Jesus (aka the Prince of Peace) by getting violent on some dude. buuuuttt...people have been bitch slapping each other in the name of Christ for centuries now, whattaya gonna do?

the lyrics are not offensive at all. however, the delivery has a tinge of that sarcastic "yeah, you're cool" in it so it might make people suspicious.
