Yeah, to the surprise of no one, it's my album of the year right now, although I honestly wouldn't dream of recommending it to anyone at all. I've even given up suggesting to my previous die-hard Hip fans that they should listen to the new releases. The 'return to form' comment is a perfect example of why I don't, as I don't think there's anything to return from with the Hip. In 22 years and 12 albums they've only released a couple of uneven records (Music at Work and Trouble at the Henhouse). In fact I'd argue that the the previous two behind World Container, In Violet Light in particular, has some of their best songs and are impressive late-period albums from a band that's been around since the 80s.
For the new one, 'Morning Moon' is a bizarre but wonderful mid-tempo opener, and kind of polar opposite to their usual fare of the the Big Rock Song to lead off the album ('Little Bones', 'Poets' 'Gift Shop', 'Blow at High Dough'). Kind of sets the mood for the whole album, particularly the 15 min of 'Now the Struggle Has a Name' and the 'Depression Suite', but then they drop a couple of decent Big Rock songs like 'Frozen in My Tracks' and 'Love is a First'. The latter is one of my favourites on the album. It's a great album for late nights and early mornings.
well ill take your word for it - i never picked up 'in violet light' or 'in between evolution' - so my comment probably wasnt fair. I guess that i felt they lost a step with Music at work and lost a bit of interest. Regardless, i loved World Container and the new one.
