i've been keeping up on andrew sullivan's daily dish at the atlantic. seems like twitter is where a lot of reports are coming from too.

many of the mainstream news outlets (particularly cnn) have totally dropped the ball on this one.

I think the american media has done a fairly decent job. I think they should cover it as objectively as possible and refrain from having too many american commentators discuss it. The more people from Iran and Middle Eastern journalism outlets the better. Khamenei is now having them investigate the election. Our government needs to shut the fuck on this and quietly influence the reformers from afar.

I can't find the source, but I think the key is to look at this as skeptically as possible,

from the same publication different (better) blogger:

Marc Ambinder Read the Iran tweets as if you were a CIA analyst: think skeptically, look for corroboration, don't put too much stock in pics or videos.

Ahmenijad's going to win after the Clerics call for a run-off.

The "I'm a Little Bit Country" episode of South Park (701) comes to mind for some reason.

i realize i'm exaggerating here, but imagine the pressure on the folks responsible for the twitter maintenance tonight? this is arguably the watershed moment for the site with all the press it's getting and they decide that at 8:45pm tehran time they need to knock the system out for 90 minutes. talk about timing.

i don't envy the folks doing the actual maintenance. "hey guys, there's a whole national progressive movement in iran waiting on you to get things back on line. good luck and don't screw it up" haha.

edit: number 2 trending topic on twitter . . . #nomaintenance

edit (2): seems that the maintenance has been postponed. . . damn twitter's lighting up like a christmas tree

edit (3): it was the state department that asked them to postpone. how do you say no to that?

in other news, i now can properly spell maintenance without the use of spell check ;)

I'm not one of those people who believe that the news media must be free of all biases—in fact, I prefer my news with some slant—but in this case I think that in the even they decide to cover these events that they do so carefully and with as much context as possible, and as little commentary and speculation as possible.

Remember how pissed we got when Al Jazeera showed Arabs cheering 9/11?

We've reached it a point where I don't think it really matters. People watch/read/listen to the news to either reinforce their position or dismiss it as republican/democrat propaganda. Their is no need for legitimacy anymore. The Daily Kos or Fox News is the bible to believers.

I really don't think what is going on in Iran is any different. Republicans will watch it looking to validate their beliefs on the Middle East, and the same for Democrats. Whether it comes from Twitter, CNN, Fox News, the Slate, it really doesn't matter.

good point made by kevin drum at mother jones regarding twitter v. the mainstream media

Quote:
It's true that however things turn out in Iran, this will probably be forever known as the Twitter Revolution. And yet, I want to dissent a bit.

I followed the events of the weekend via three basic sources. The first was cable news, and as everyone in the world has pointed out, it sucked. Most TV news outlets have no foreign bureaus anymore; they didn't know what was going on; and they were too busy producing their usual weekend inanity to care. Grade: F.

The second was Twitter, mostly as aggregated by various blogs. This had the opposite problem: there was just too much of it; it was nearly impossible to know who to trust; and the overwhelming surge of intensely local and intensely personal views made it far too easy to get caught up in events and see things happening that just weren't there. It was better than cable news, but not exactly the future of news gathering. Grade: B-.

The third was the small number of traditional news outlets that do still have foreign bureaus and real expertise. The New York Times. The BBC. Al Jazeera. A few others. The twitterers were a part of the story that they reported, but they also added real background, real reporting, and real context to everything. Grade: B+. Given the extremely difficult reporting circumstances, maybe more like an A-.

Twitter has been a great tool for the Iranian protesters — and for us. Marc Ambinder rounds up the evidence here. But protests have happened before without either Twitter or the internet. And if we westerners had to rely on only a single news source to tell us what what going on, I'd still choose the dwindling band of serious outlets that provide real reporting from dangerous (and expensive) places. Cable news may not have covered itself with glory this weekend, but there are still a few precincts of the MSM that did.
