i sold a smartphone on ebay, and the winner just sent me this:

"im sorry but last night i made a bid on the same phone from another seller and i bought it. if you dont mind can you please cancel this."

so i'm thinking of responding with this:

"i will gladly cancel if you pay my final value and insertion fees" (possibly implying i'll leave horrible feedback if they don't)

is this best practice? i don't think there's much i can do otherwise. i don't sell on ebay all that often

If you do decide to cancel the order, DEFINITELY leave negative feedback and describe what the guy did. You live and die by that feedback.

i dont think sellers can leave negative feedback anymore, didnt they change that recently? with the new fee increases that has really hurt the ebay seller industry

i think cancelling is my only option. i don't think there's anyway i could force them to pay up.

but i'd definitely mar their buyer history with some brutally honest feedback

good luck, your options as seller are to leave positive feedback or to not leave any. now you could rate them as positive and then express your dissatisfaction in the text

I forgot about that. Motherfuckers. I've never had to drop negative criticism on anybody as a buyer or seller and I've got a healthy little ebay addiction.

Also toots, there's this:

Quote:
A bid or purchase on eBay is considered a contract and you’re obligated to purchase the item. However, if you feel that you have a legitimate reason for not buying the item, you can contact the seller and explain your situation. Many sellers are willing to work with you if you communicate with them openly and honestly. If you haven’t done so already, request the seller’s contact information and call him or her. Possibly, things can be worked out to everyone’s satisfaction.

If the seller doesn’t respond in the way you hope, keep in mind that failing to purchase an item you have won can result in an unpaid item strike being filed against you by the seller. If you get too many strikes in too short a time period, your account may be restricted or suspended.

SO you can either cancel the order or play hardball with the unpaid item strike.

Leave negative feedback, notify eBay to try and recoup insertion fees, and offer it to the runner up. At the least, I think eBay will allow you to re-list for free.

Don't cancel. Make the buyer cancel it. Send him an invoice. Then you can claim non-payment and get your fees refunded. It takes forever, like 45 days total or something, but it's the process.

If you're angry about it, sure play hardball. But ebay will allow both parties to get out of the purchase if both parties agree... no strike on buyer, no fees on seller. Sure, you can play hardball now... but there may come a time in the future where you'll be in a position where you need mercy from a seller.

Are you arguing in favor of EBay karma? There's no such thing. Hell, I just got a note a few days ago from a seller asking where his $ was afetr I'd already sent a note and said that I was bidding on another record from him and wanted to combine shipping...

...after 2 days.

You can and should still file a Non-Paying-Bidder complaint against the original winner. They shouldn't be getting away with that crap (bidding on/winning multiple items and then trying to cancel one) simply because you were able to sell to the next highest bidder.

True. It's shitty behavior.

ebay aggravation #2

help me out with this one powersellers...

so i posted a pair of Bose Tri-Port noise-cancelling headphones, in fine working order EXCEPT that one ear cup is broken from the headband. i stated this clearly in the auction, which can be viewed here

the winner sent me this message this morning:

"You did not state that you already attempted to glue/epoxy the ear piece and were not successful. And, during the process glue splattered and is on the ear piece. I am not a happy camper. Waiting for your response before leaving feedback."

in fairness, i did try to glue it myself, but it wasn't nearly the science fair project described above, and not enough that i thought warranted mention. the auction was, after all, for a broken pair of Bose headphones with an opening bid of 99 cents. (sold for 44.00 plus shipping)

so...

should i have been more clear in my description, or should i consider this guy overly picky and take the negative feedback on my otherwise unblemished sales record?

whats the best way to respond here?

fwiw, i don't sell more than a few items per year on ebay so i'm not really going to sweat a negative feedback rating.

whachoo think?

yeah, you probably should've either mentioned that you tried to fix them or remove all traces that you tried to fix them.

seems fair i guess

i will respond and ask them how they would like to see this resolved

at any rate, i may have a broken, but still working pair of Bose headphones up on the market soon if anyone is interested. dirt cheap. glue stain included, no extra charge

The guy probably had plans to repair them and can't because of the glue. Asking him how he wants to resolve the issue is the right way to go.
