this guy writes a decent review of the new tortoise album and makes good points later in the review but man, what a totally pretentious (maybe just plain weird) lede:

That's a fancy way of saying "no influence whatsoever".

So you're still trying to pretend like this is true.

I'd really like to hear this. I never listened to the album after Standards, but Tortoise used to be one of my favorite bands around.

Speaking of Tortoise, they're doing an in-store at Amoeba Hollywood on July 9th.

I'm seeing them in DC in July. I'm pretty pumped.

absolutely ridiculous. give me a break. we're not just talking Tortoise. their 'influence' also includes and created: Sea & Cake, Sam Prekop, Brokeback, Stereolab, --> Broadcast, etc. etc. ....

Anyway. I'm very excited to listen to the new one. Just picked it up. Discovered them at Millions Now Living and can honestly say they are one of my fav bands of all time. I wasn't so excited when I first heard "It's All Around You" (their last one) but it's quite the grower. Awesome record.

They sure have been an influence on me, if that counts for anything. :-)

Yeah, the "almost rivals" part of that quote is what's preposterous about it.

I mean, they might end up being roughly equivalent, but it's a little early to say that about Animal Collective, to say the least.

TNT reminded me too much of Spinal Tap's jazz odyssey. Haven't paid any attention to them since.

I think you've misread the review. I think the author was trying to say that Tortoise was to their music scene what Animal Collective is to this music scene, and not that AC is a major influence in the historical sense. At least that's how I read it.

Well, it's sort of the same thing. The reviewer is looking back and, with historicial perspective, describing the influence that Tortoise had over their respective scene. He can't really do that yet with Animal Collective, but he's subtly suggesting that their influence is somehow larger. And yet, it's just as possible that they could "fade away" after Merriweather Post Pavilion like he's saying Tortoise did after Standards.

I guess the review is trying to rope in younger listeners who aren't familiar with Tortoise but who recognize Animal Collective as a big deal. It does seem a little odd to make that sort of retroactive comparison while assigning greater importance to a newer artist. But I dunno, for all I know it could be accurate. Pitchfork might receive thousands of promos from Animal Collective wannabe's. There's no question that AC have had an impact (there are several obvious imitations), but that can seem a little inflated because we're right in the middle of the peak of it, probably.
