That's odd that people don't want a 200 page magazine with 158 pages of ads. I mean, what country is this?

the New York Times is about to go under.

The Times and Conde Nast pubs are doing comparably fine.

The Thriller in Vaniller.

Damn, wish I'd thought of that while he was still alive.

Spin layed off 20% of its staff yesterday and Gannett, the world's largest newspaper publisher layed off 1400 people.

I am telling you it's all going to hell.

and yes, Conde Nast and Hearst are MAJORLY feeling this.

of course they are feeling it. Advertising and marketing budgets are the first thing cut during slower economic times, especially $ devoted toward general "branding" campaigns. The publishing industry is always hit hard during recessions. this is always true -- nothing new.

It is more about this than free web content being a strong competitor to good print magazines. Good magazines aren't as impacted by the web as newspapers are which are hurt by the immediacy of the internet as a newsforum and the loss of classified revenue to craigslist.

And your better newspapers will still be fine. NYT and WSJ for example will not go under. Newspapers will have to adapt to stay competitive but they are not going away.

The idea that the entire publishing industry is going under is complete and utter bullshit.

Using the term "fingered" in relation to that jackass is some low-hanging fruit.
But I still snickered.
