Great to hear this guy's voice again. I was (eventually) a big fan of Chamberlain's last album, The Moon My Saddle, and have been keeping an ear out for anything Moore has done since. I really dug the Chevy Downs album, and I am enjoying this solo album upon the first couple of listens.

It is very similar to The Moon My Saddle - era Chamberlain, and even moreso to some of the stuff on their posthumous release Exit 263. It's definitely lacking some of the edge of those albums, production-wise - it's kind of more watered down or something (Maybe it's just that the songs aren't as guitar-heavy as the Chamberlain stuff). Still, the songs and Moore's aching, soulful voice are great as always.

My guess is that the main complaint of Moore detractors will be that his lyrics can be a little cheesy and he repeats a lot of the same themes. I can see it. But the guy is who he is, and that's what he does. I really dug his writing with Chamberlain, and there is nothing really new here lyrically.
That being said, Moore makes it work for him, if for no other reason than the fact that he has been doing it so long that it is obviously genuine.

RIYL: Delbert McClinton, Springsteen, Chamberlain, "Soon Enough" by the Constantines

Disclaimer: Modem has been a fan of Chamberlain and Moore since Chamberlain's second album. His perception of Moore and this album are probably tainted by this history.
