Heard this when I was in a record store up in Traverse City last week.
Sounded excellent and we wound up buying their first album as a result. (Neither me nor my wife had ever heard them before and we both loved it.) We'll probably buy the new one when we can.

EDIT: Downloaded both songs available at their site. (Yeah, there's 2 available now.)

Todd - fyi - you need to get Songs: Ohia's album called Magnolia Electric Co. ASAP.

You now need:

Songs: Ohia
Didn't It Rain
Axxess & Ace
The Lioness
Magnolia Electric Co.
Impala

All of the Magnolia Elec. Co. stuff is optional IMO, but it's all at least pretty good. I think I like both albums he put out under his own name (Jason Molina) better than any of the MEC stuff except maybe the Sojourner box, which is a little pricey to recommend right off the bat.

And Todd, which album did you get? What Comes After the Blues, Trials and Errors, or Magnolia Electric Co.? I guess any of those could be considered MEC's "debut".

This band has been a CMJ/Obner favorite forever - how is it possible someone has been a member of both boards without ever hearing it?

Also, the new album is the epitome of meh.

Actually, that was maybe a little harsh. I'm sure Magnolia Electric Co. is something you folks would like.

Despite never hearing them, I knew that.
Oh, and I've also never heard Songs: Ohia.

I do need to get on that, I suppose.

Just never got around to it, I suppose. Other things just kept taking precedence as "must hears".

I did, however once share a bill with Dan Sullivan from Songs: Ohia/Magnolia Electric Co., many moons ago. He was playing under the not so clever stage name "Nad Navillus".

Still, he was an outstanding guitar player.

how is molina live? i'm debating whether or not to see him in pdx coming up here. it is our first night there, and i'd be dragging my hippie-buddy along (who i can't really decide if he might like mec or not).

but, i really enjoy all of his albums and i enjoy checking out other venues -- this one is at the doug fir. i could see his shows possibly being a downer though....

Magnolia is great live. And try picking up the live album 'Trials & Errors'. For me that beats everything else he ever released.

I really like the album Magnolia Electric Company from when they were called Songs: Ohia. I was kind of excited when I saw this one come out because it had a fully finished version of Whip-poor-will, which sounded like a great song in demo form on the free CD they tossed in with the vinyl packages of the previously mentioned album. But, I have to say they changed it around way too much in my opinion and this is one of the rare occasions where I thought the demo version was better.
