Rolling Stone is all apedick over it. Haven't heard it, but am more and more guffawing at Pitchfork's need to ravage acts they think they've helped create but have decided have gotten away from them.

My friend is a freak about Mars Volta and claimed that this album was "the best rock album of all time." He is smoking crack.

Although, I haven't heard it yet and I don't really care what the reviews say, if I like it I like it.

At the Drive In was a pretty good band. Sparta and Mars Volta are not.

The word is boring.

Pitchfork is full of shizza, but the new Trail stuff is godawful. I saw them playing it last November and watched the crowd slowly die.

As I remember, Pitchfork didn't like deloused in the comatorium. Pitchfork is blocked at my work, so I can't check this.

I like the album. It's not the best rock album of all time (obviously), and yes it is very self indulgent. But a 2.0? Come on.

No critic is ever going to match your tastes exactly, and I wouldn't want it any other way. But there are critics whose opinions I respect even though they often differ from mine (such as fast n bulbous), and there are critics whose opinions seem arbitrary or misguided. Many of the critics at pitchfork fall in the latter category for me. Again, I haven't read the review because the site is blocked here. Maybe it really is a fantastic and enlightening review that I'll agree with. But based on past experience with pitchfork, I'm not holding out much hope.

my take on *all this*? ppl should stop commenting on trite things like music at any critical level, and ideally focus on the more savage traits of man. such as murdering your enemies, eating good food, and fucking beautiful women.

i can't relate to the recent direction of Mars Volta or Trail of Dead. for me, that's just a matter of personal aesthetic preference and (subjective) ability to value something (and/or decide its relative merits and worth in my own little world). in other words, my opinion, which happens to sync up with pitchfork, has little to do with the views of Pitchfork. rather, i'm just genuinely not that into the new Mars Volta (and i was a fan of both ATDI and the first MV) and i think the Trail of Dead record should've been shelved and the band given a do-over.

Meta Critic gives Mars Volta a 71. Its review system is much better and more reliable than Pitchfork's. That said, I'm still not buying Mars Volta.

The new Mars Volta did little for me, but I like the first half of the new Trail of Dead a whole lot. The second half drags a bit, but I still like it as a whole.

Then again, I also like Westerberg solo.
