Sloan Bassist Recovering After Being Hit by Drunk Driver
Last Friday, Sloan bassist Chris Murphy was hospitalized with a broken collarbone when he was thrown from his bicycle after being struck by a drunk driver in a hit-and-run accident. Murphy also incurred assorted cuts and bruises and was released the next day to convalesce at home.
The iconic Nova Scotia band released a statement saying, "We're confident that he will have a full recovery and he has not sustained any critical injuries." Murphy will require additional surgery this week, according to a post on Sloan's Twitter page. They also urge fans to "kick a drunk driver in the face for us."
Despite the pending operation, Murphy still plans on taking the stage with Sloan at Halifax 's Citadel Hall this Sunday when the band's show goes on as planned. Murphy will have to forgo his routine bass duties and occasional drumming for the gig but he will be able to sing. The Sloan camp says, "Other members of the band will pitch in, swapping instruments to cover for him as required through the performance."
While Murphy is expected to have a full recovery, the remainder of Sloan's upcoming summer dates are in doubt. Meanwhile the suspect's days on the lam seem numbered. According to the band's statement, "Witnesses were able to report the license number and model of the vehicle, and police are now investigating."
