Harry Patch (In Memory Of) is a standalone release in tribute to Harry Patch, the last surviving UK veteran of World War 1, who died on 25 July 2009 at the age of 111. The song was released as a download direct from Radiohead’s website on Wednesday August 5th, 2009.

The release was announced by Thom Yorke through a blog post:

“Recently the last remaining UK veteran of the 1st world war Harry Patch died at the age of 111.

I had heard a very emotional interview with him a few years ago on the Today program on Radio4.
The way he talked about war had a profound effect on me.
It became the inspiration for a song that we happened to record a few weeks before his death.
It was done live in an abbey. The strings were arranged by Jonny.
I very much hope the song does justice to his memory as the last survivor.â€

Shouldn't Thom have referred to it as The Great War?

more importantly, shouldn't oily have referred to Yorke as "his highest holiness"?

Strings are nice, would like to hear Greenwood do more arrangements like that. I thought what he did with the score/sdtrk for There Will Be Blood hinted at some really great things, and would very much like to hear him (perhaps he already has and I just haven't heard it) do a lot more true composition (for lack of a better word).

it sounds like the end of a war movie, the poignant part where flags wave o'er the battlefield and misty-eyed survivors look freedomingly into the horizon

and with thom yorke's warbling over the top

agreed. i'd be all for the next album sounding similar to this, or at least more string arrangements being used.

It blows. Don't waste your time.

Music would be good for a short film

Ok, how about it's utterly inessential in Radiohead's catalog.

Radiohead frontman Thom Yorke has ruled out releasing any more Radiohead albums - because to do so would "kill" the band.

The Creep hitmakers are contemplating selling individual songs one at a time rather than full-length efforts, which Yorke insists requires a concerted effort to complete.

He says, "None of us want to go into that creative hoo-ha (commotion) of a long-play record again. Not straight off. I mean, it's just become a real drag. It worked with In Rainbows because we had a real fixed idea about where we were going. But we've all said that we can't possibly dive into that again. It'll kill us."

The star went on to clarify the band isn't necessarily against the concept of an album, adding, "Obviously, there's still something great about the album. It's just, for us, right now, we need to get away from it a bit. In Rainbows was a particular aesthetic and I can't bear the idea of doing that again."

Radiohead's latest song, written in honour of the late World War I veteran Harry Patch, is only available via internet download.

It must be so painful to be such a tortured genius. "Oh, music is so hard, so real, that we just can't possibly extract any joy or satisfaction from creating and playing it."

Seriously, fuck that delicate flower and fuck anybody who takes these douchebags seriously.

I would expect to see this GIF brought to the board by other CMJObner Chicago luminaries like robotboy or kingofcarrotflowers, but not poptodd. At least, not unless mushrooms are involved. (To that, I still contend TOG has led a much more debauched life than any of the GARS.)

Anyway, good show, Hop on Pop.

Well he's definitely sporting more temporal lobe damage.

Yeah, bands in the sixties used to put out three classic albums in a single calendar year.

Embarrassing, but what do you expect from these poo faced dipshits.

Also, I bet old Harry Patch would have hated Radiohead more than the fucking Kaiser!
